content

Nels Coxman is a snowplow driver in the glittering Colorado ski area of Kehoe, where he was just named Citizen of the Year. His quiet life comes to an abrupt end when his son Kyle dies of a heroin overdose. Nels wife Grace has a nervous breakdown over the death of her son and leaves her husband in grief.

A depressed Coxman is about to commit suicide when he learns that his son was murdered by a drug cartel. Therefore, he makes a modified hunting rifle and kills three members of the cartel. He sinks the corpses in a nearby river. He gets an additional insight into the criminal network from his brother Brock, who was once a thug for the local cartel under the code name "Wingman". The leader of the cartel, Trevor "Viking" Calcote, suspects that these deaths are the work of the Indian drug lord White Bull, with whom he previously avoided conflicts. Calcote kidnaps and murders White Bull's only son, sparking a gang war.

Coxman wants to know from his brother how he can now hold "Viking" accountable. Brock's advice to hire the killer "Eskimo" for it goes wrong, because although he collects the bounty, "Viking" betrays the assignment. Now “Viking” confuses the Coxman brothers. When he contacts Brock, he takes responsibility because he will die of cancer anyway.

Calcote tries in vain to end the gang war by claiming that one of his men killed White Bull's son. In the meantime, Coxman kidnaps Calcote's son from an elite school to ambush the drug lord. Coxman treats the boy well and befriends him. Calcote learns from the school caretaker that Nels Coxman is the kidnapper. He now realizes who killed his men. A race begins, in which the White Bull cartel (“A son for a son”) takes part.

Coxman's ambush fails, and he is captured by Calcote's men. When the White Bull gang arrives shortly afterwards, there is a shootout in which almost all the gangsters are killed. Calcote wants to flee by car; Coxman stops him with a tree felling machine.

When Coxman leaves the property in his snowplow to continue his work, White Bull jumps into the cabin. Calcote's body is found by Detective Kimberly Dash and her partner, Gip. The last remaining enforcer of the White Bull cartel accidentally flies his paraglider into the snow blower of the snow plow and is chopped up.

reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved for people aged 16 and over . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The drastic story is easy to understand and enriched with a lot of black humor and bizarre characters. Despite the numerous exaggerations and ironic refractions, the excessive scenes of violence can have a disturbing and disorienting effect on children and young people under the age of 16. "

Reviews and grossing results

So far, the film has received the approval of 70 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and achieved a score of 57 on Metacritic .

The film critic Antje Wessels writes that although Hans Petter Moland had far more budget available for his new edition than for the original, he was pleasantly not tempted to give his film a typical Hollywood glossy look. Hard powder is just as dirty as the original, except that the tracking shots, which are sometimes modeled 1: 1 one after the other, look a little bit more valuable and better lit, according to Wessels, which is good for the whole project.

Matthias von Viereck from the dpa explains that the American natives are portrayed by the director in a pleasingly unstereotypical way for US cinema and thinks that it is difficult to think of a better cast of the main character for Hard Powder : “Neeson has star appeal, and yet is his game is always headstrong, less pleasing than you know from many male Hollywood colleagues. "

Michael Ranze from the film service, on the other hand, says that the original didn't deserve the hype that arose around the action comedy. In Hard Powder , which uses the same set pieces, Ranze also criticizes that Liam Neeson plays with such "grimness" that humor falls by the wayside. The author also emphasizes the racist undertones of the film: "The fact that the Serbs of the original, who were abused as Albanians, are mutating into Indians underlines the perfidy of the concept: Xenophobia and racism are quite acceptable in entertainment cinema."

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is $ 76.4 million. The film recorded 132,449 visitors in Germany.
