Joseph von Held

Joseph Held , from 1867 Ritter von Held , (born August 9, 1815 in Würzburg , † March 19, 1890 ibid) was a German constitutional lawyer . In 1882/83 he was rector of the Royal University of Würzburg . In 1866 he was a co-founder of the Bavarian Red Cross .

Life

Held was born the son of a businessman. After high school, he studied philosophy and jurisprudence at the Royal University of Würzburg and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Following the state bankruptcy, he moved to the University of Heidelberg , where he became a Dr. phil. received his doctorate. The work may have been printed at the University of Erlangen . In 1838 he was at the University of Würzburg Dr. iur. utr. PhD. His legal dissertation was entitled: The marital achievement according to the popular law and legal books of the Middle Ages, compared with some Nordic legal sources .

1839 followed the habilitation (writing: De juris canonici circa usuras interdictis ) and the private lectureship . In 1841 he became an associate professor. From 1843 to 1865 he was an ordained professor for German private law, Bavarian land law and feudal law. In 1849/50 Georg Phillips was also appointed; Hero Felix Dahn followed on the chair of private law . He turned increasingly to public law; from 1851 onwards he also taught general, common German and Bavarian constitutional law, legal philosophy and international law as the successor to Hermann Müller . He taught until his death in 1890; his successor to the chair for public law was Karl Freiherr von Stengel . He was dean of the law and political science faculty nine times and held the post of rector in 1882/83 . His merit lies primarily in the field of state education and state philosophy.

Held, who was considered a liberal supporter of the constitutional monarchy based on the rule of law , applied in vain for the Würzburg seat in the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848 . Hofrat since 1863 , he was raised to the personal nobility status in 1867 by being awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown and was allowed to call himself "Knight of Held" after being entered in the nobility register .

He performed medical services and was a co-founder of the Bavarian Red Cross in 1866 . In 1868 he was its representative in the extension of the Geneva Convention . During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he was responsible for the wounded in the army. He has received numerous awards for his services.

His son Adolf Held , who died early, was a professor of economics in Berlin.
