During the Cold War , scientists commissioned the US military to develop a laser satellite to protect the US from nuclear missile attacks. After the first test was successful, the Russians see themselves at a disadvantage and hijack the main developer of the satellite with a nuclear submarine so that he can also build a laser satellite for missile defense for the Soviet Union. To prevent this, the Americans sink the Russian submarine with the scientist on board using a nuclear torpedo. From that moment on, tensions between NATO and the Warsaw Pact intensified , with both the American and Russian presidents ordering the immediate mobilization of all their armed forces in Europe. Shortly afterwards, a momentous incident occurs: a Russian pilot seeking asylum lands with a new type of bomber on a West German base. To prevent the bomber from falling into the hands of NATO and in retaliation for the sinking of the Russian submarine, Soviet warplanes attack the base. In this attack, both the super bomber and the base are completely destroyed. However, at the last moment, two tornado fighter planes escape and destroy an East German base in retaliation. This results in a military conflict between the armed forces of NATO and the Warsaw Pact on German soil. When, during the fighting, a British soldier illegally fired a missile equipped with a nuclear warhead at the Soviet armored units and a little later a Soviet submarine, seriously damaged after a battle with the US Navy, accidentally fired several nuclear missiles on the American east coast, the situation escalated and there is a nuclear war between the USA and the USSR that threatens to destroy the whole world.

In 1983 the anime was released on VHS cassette in Germany under the title Zero Time - Der III. World War has started at Vegas Video with a running time of approximately 115 minutes.

On September 4, 2016, SchröderMedia announced that it had acquired the rights to Das Ende aller Tage and released the anime film on DVD for the first time in Germany on November 3, 2016.
