Digimon Tamers ( Jap. デジモンテイマーズ) is the third Anime - TV series of Digimon - franchises . This has no direct connection to the two previous series, as it takes place in a completely different world that is independent of this. However, the character Ryō Akiyama serves as a loose connection . The series was produced by the Toei Animation studio and broadcast on television in Japan and several other countries, including Germany.

World and technology

The concept of a digital world ( Digiwelt ), in which Digimon exist independently as artificial life forms, was adopted from the predecessor anime Digimon and Digimon 02 , whereby the Digiwelt itself plays a much smaller role. The human-Digimon partner principle and the different levels and types of Digimon as well as their ability to digitize are also available again.

In contrast to the first two series, the fighting characteristics of the Digimon are not only influenced by their digitization level, but also by the use of trading cards that correspond to the cards of the Digital Monster Card Game that are actually available in many countries . These enable the Digimon to use certain techniques or digitation. The cards are read in with the so-called D-Power (Japanese D-Arc ) that the human partner possesses.

The main characters and their Digimon do not come together in Digimon Tamers as in the previous series through an unknown force, but voluntarily decide to work together. That is why they are not called Digiritter , but - from which the series is named - Digimon-Tamer . Compared to its predecessors, the Digitation is much more difficult and even more dependent on the feelings of the tamer. Even digging to the champion level is only possible under certain conditions, e.g. B. when the tamer is in danger. Also, in the first two thirds of the series, the presence of the Digimon Calumon is required, which releases the light of the Digitation.

The following new digitations, some of which are also called "Evolution" in the German version, are introduced in the series and replace all previous ones:

Digitation (エ ボ リ ュ ー シ ョ ンEboryūshon , "Evolution" )

In this digitation, sometimes also called "Evolution" in the German version, the Digimon changes from rookie to champion level. It can be assumed that this digitization will also be used to develop from baby to training and from this to rookie level, even if this variant is not seen in the series.

Matrix Digitation (マ ト リ ッ ク ス エ ボ リ ュ ー シ ョ ンMatorikkusu Eboryūshon , "Matrix Evolution" )

The matrix digitation from rookie or champion to ultra level is only possible with the help of a blue trading card , which is created from a normal trading card in various emergency situations without the conscious involvement of the tamer.

Tamer Matrix Digitation

For the tamer matrix digitation from the rookie to the mega level, the tamer has to merge with his digimon. It is actually only possible in the Digiwelt, since both partners consist of data there, but thanks to the power of the Digimon gods it can also be carried out in the real world. In any case, absolute mutual trust and a strong will to win are a prerequisite.

action

The boy Takato Matsuki is a huge fan of the anime series and the Digimon trading card game. When one day he finds a blue card and swipes it through his card game module, it becomes a D-Power. On the same evening the D-Power comes into contact with some concept drawings of the new digimon Guilmon, which he invented . In fact, this very soon appears in the real world and becomes friends with him. Soon he meets Henry Wong and Rika Nonaka, who also have real Digimon. In contrast to Takato and Henry, who get along straight away, Rika pursues completely different ideas, for them Digimon exist only for fighting. After a while, however, she changes her attitude due to some experiences with her Digimon. Together they find Calumon, who apparently comes from the Digiwelt, but has no memories of its own , and Impmon , who behaves like a poorly brought up little child and enjoys playing pranks on people.

The team's first adversary is Mitsuo Yamaki, who, as the head of the government-launched Hypnos project, is trying to destroy all Digimon. However, when he wants to take the final blow and with the help of the computer program Shaggai wants to banish all Digimon from the real world forever, the Deva appear through the resulting connection to the Digiwelt . These twelve particularly strong Digimon each embody a Chinese zodiac sign . The Tamers seem to be hopelessly inferior, but in the end they succeed one after the other to digitize their Digimon to the ultra level with the help of blue cards and to defeat the Deva one after the other. In the meantime, Takato's classmate Jen Katō also meets her Digimon partner Leomon .

After the Tamers have beaten more than half of the Deva in battle, one of them kidnaps Calumon into the Digiwelt. As a result, Takato, Rika, Henry and Jen set off for the Digiworld with Takato's classmates Kazu Shiota and Kenta Kitagawa to save Calumon. On their journey they are separated several times and by chance meet the Tamer Ryō Akiyama, who has been with his partner in the Digiwelt for several months, and Shibumi , one of the creators of the Digiwelt, who is in a coma in the real world, manifested as a spirit in the digiworld. Eventually all children get to the level of the digimong gods, where they meet Suzie Wong, Henry's little sister, who inadvertently also got into the digimong world. Together they fight Beelzemon , the digitized form of Impmon, who was promised great power by the wicked Deva Caturamon if it defeats the Tamer. Because of the lies of Caturamon (all people are selfish and selfish) and out of sheer gullibility, Impmon had agreed to the unfortunate deal without being aware of the consequences. Due to the new great power, Impmon lost control of himself and, as Beelzemon, became a dangerous gunman.

When Beelzemon kills Jens Digimon partner Leomon in a blind rage, she suffers a nervous breakdown and Takato is enraged. At all costs he wants Guilmon to dig into the mega-level and avenge Leomon. Guilmon actually digests into the mega-level Digimon Megidramon , but as this is uncontrollable and still does not have enough strength to beat Beelzemon. When Megidramon is defeated, Takato reflects on his and Guilmon's development and understands Guilmon as a living being. When he wishes to be able to stand by him in battle, they both dig into Gallantmon and defeat Beelzemon. Only Jens' grace towards Beelzemon prevents him from being killed by Gallantmon. Horrified by what he did in his rampage, Beelzemon withdraws and sinks into thoughts. The Tamers move on and meet Zukiyaomon , one of the four sovereigns. Henry is now digging up to the mega-level with his Digimon and wants to fight against Zukiyaomon, but Azulongmon , another sovereign, stops the fight and draws everyone's attention to the “real enemy” of all Digimon - the data erasure program D-Reaper .

D-Reaper, embodied by a light purple mass, the mere touch of which can be fatal, penetrates through openings in the floor everywhere in the Digiwelt. The sovereigns and the Tamer fight against it, with Rika digging up to the mega-level with her Digimon, but fail, whereupon the sovereigns call all Digimon together for a decisive battle and the children return to the real world with the help of an "ark". Rika and Renamon rescue Impmon, who had reverted to normal after an attack, and take him to the ark. Impmon decided from now on to be good and to assist the Tamers in the event of a fight.

However, D-Reaper manages to penetrate the real world and kidnap Jen, who is still in shock and barely accessible. So Takato and his friends face D-Reaper. Impmon had meanwhile returned to his friends, the children Ai and Mako. He now had to painfully discover that Caturamon had lied to him from the start. Because Ai and Mako hadn't forgotten their Digimon, but were expecting his return all the time. When Impmon sees on television that the Tamers are about to lose in a fight against an agent of the D-Reaper, he sets off in his new mega form Beelzemon Blast Mode , comes to the aid of the Tamers and decides the fight in their favor. Impmon alias Beelzemon is from now on a valuable ally for the Tamer in the fight against the D-Reaper and his henchmen.

When Ryō comes to their aid and they receive the power of the sovereigns, so that they can dig into the mega-level in the real world, they seem to have a chance against the main part of the D-Reaper. In the end they fail, despite the help of Yamaki, Shibumi and the rest of the creators of the Digiwelt. However, they manage to tear Jen out of her trance so that she tries to free herself.

A week later, D-Reaper took control of the whole of downtown Tokyo and now wants to connect the digiworld and the real world in order to strike out for the final blow and wipe out all life in the worlds. Exactly this opportunity is used by the Tamers to launch a final attack against D-Reaper. The group splits up: while Takato as Gallantmon attacks the core of D-Reaper and Jen saves, the others fly to the gateway between the real and the digiworld. After the argents are defeated, MegaGargomon (Henry) rotates in the gate with faster than light speed and thus slowly collapses D-Reaper. In doing so, however, the barrier between the worlds is re-established. Jen can forgive Impmon after he heroically tried as Beelzemon and at the risk of his life to free her from the clutches of the D-Reaper and narrowly failed. He was seriously injured by the D-Reaper and only survived thanks to Grani, Gallantmon's flying device. Ai and Mako had become Impmons Tamers a little later. Then the Digimon begin to glow and transform back into the training forms. The Digimon now have to return to the Digiwelt, so that the Tamers have to say goodbye to them.

In the epilogue, Takato describes how his life returns to normal within a few weeks. He ends the series with the sentence: "But Guilmon changed my life."

Characters

Note: The age information in the German version is partly contradictory and has therefore been replaced by the original.

Takato Matsuki ( 松田 啓 人 Matsuda Takato )

The ten-year-old student Takato is shy, meek, and often fearful. He likes to draw and invents his own Digimon, even in class, which gets him some trouble. He is also in love with his classmate Jen Kato and openly shows her his feelings towards the end of the series. His parents, with whom he has a good relationship, own a bakery. However, as the series progresses, he becomes bolder, more mature, and stronger-willed.
In the audio CD drama Days -Jouhou to Hinichijou- , which partly takes place in 2018, he is a computer scientist and is looking for a way to see Guilmon again and is traveling around the world to do so. He is also engaged to Jen Katō, whom he would like to marry after his trip
His partner is the daring and childlike dinosaur Digimon Guilmon , which was created from one of his drawings. Due to the lack of life experience, it initially knows no boundaries and is easy to influence. However, over time it will mature.

Rika Nonaka ( 牧野 留 姫 Makino Ruki )

The ten-year-old girl Rika is conceited, bitchy and lonely. She lives with her mother, a model, and her grandmother on a property and attends a girls' school. At first, her relationship with her family is tense and distant. In the course of the series, however, she gains team spirit and becomes friendlier and her relationship with her family also normalizes, but her father does not appear in the series.
Your partner Renamon is polite but also proud. It made a conscious decision to partner with Rika in order to become stronger. At the beginning of their partnership it was more of an alliance of convenience, but a friendship develops here too.

Henry Wong ( 李 健 良 Lee Jenrya / Jianliang )

Ten-year-old Henry is calm, sometimes precocious, and always concerned about his partner Terriermon . At the beginning of the series he tries to solve every conflict peacefully and forbids Terriermon to dig deeper, but increasingly realizes that this is not possible. He often argues with his little sister Suzie, but develops a protective instinct for her as the series progresses. His older siblings are only mentioned.
Terriermon is often cheeky and, to Henry's displeasure, likes to put himself in danger. It is known for the saying Momantai .

Jen Katō ( 加藤 樹 莉 Katō Juri )

Jen is ten years old and one of Takato's classmates. She knows that Takato is in love with her and also secretly reciprocates the feelings. However, she is waiting for Takato to take the first step, which the series does not. Her mother died in her childhood when she was young, she has a difficult relationship with her father and she cannot make friends with her stepmother. At school she still shows herself to be an open-minded and happy girl. At first she has no relation to Digimon, but that changes when she meets Guilmon. Later she gets her own Digimon with Leomon , which is killed by the rampaging Beelzemon, which causes depression in her. She is later kidnapped by D-Reaper, but it is unclear exactly when this will happen, and replaced by an agent . Only through Calumon does she break through her grief and can be saved by Takato.
In the planning phase, Chiaki Konaka developed a concept, which was rejected. Her name should be Mishio and she should have a little sister, whom she is very worried about since her parents work in the red light district.

Ryō Akiyama ( 秋山 リ ョ ウ Akiyama Ryō )

Fourteen-year-old Ryō is brave, determined and combative. His partner is the wild Cyberdramon who is on the lookout for his real enemy . It represents a connection between the Tamers world and the Adventure world and has appeared in several flashbacks of Digimon Adventure 02 . At the end of the video game Digimon Tamers: Brave Tamer for the Bandai Wonderswan, he gets into the Tamers world.
He was the only character given by Bandai.

Kazu Shiota ( 塩 田 博 和 Shiota Hirokazu )

Ten-year-old Kazu is one of Takato's classmates and best friends. Like Takato, he is a big Digimon fan and, after he is a tamer, he wants a Digimon too. In the Digiwelt he then finds his partner named Guardromon .

Kenta Kitagawa ( 北 川 健 太 Kitagawa Kenta )

Kenta is ten years old and also a friend and classmate of Takato. He receives his Digimon MarineAngemon very late in the fight against D-Reaper, which is why he stays in the background most of the time. It has more of a passive attack.

Suzie Wong ( 李 小春 Lee Shuichon / Xiǎochūn )

Henry's seven-year-old little sister is very tearful and has great childlike naivete. Her partner is Lopmon , one of the Deva. Lopmon is a calm, wise Digimon, which Suzie's often annoying manner can endure.

Calumon ( Kurumon / Culumon )

Calumon is a wild Digimon, which, as it turns out later, houses the light of the Digitation and can let other Digimon digitize. In contrast to the other Digimons, it doesn't have a tamer and doesn't want one, but it seems to have a close relationship with Jen and also lives with her and her family for a while. After Jen was kidnapped by D-Reaper, Calumon follows her into the center of D-Reaper and stays with her until the end to cheer her up. Like Guilmon, it is very playful and childlike, but does not accept borders. Calumon ends many sentences with the word "Calu", which is intended to emphasize his childlike nature. At the end it returns with the other Digimon to the Digiwelt.
In contrast to other Digimon, Calumon has no attack and therefore does not fight.

Impmon

Impmon is small, naughty, and likes to bully other people. His trademarks are his red scarf and gloves, as well as his large ears and a smiley face on his stomach. Impmon once lived with the children Ai and Mako, but then ran away after they had argued too much about him.
