Digimon ( Jap. デジモンアドベンチャー Dejimon Adobenchā ), also known as Digimon Adventure is an anime - television series from 1999 that the Digimon - Franchise belongs. The anime was produced by the Tōei Animation studio and broadcast on television in Japan and several other countries, including Germany and Austria . It can be classified into the genres of shons , adventure , action and science fiction .

The concept of the series is based on the 1997 game Digimon . It's about the fight between different monsters. The actual plot, on the other hand, was developed specifically for the anime and only then adopted in subsequent games. The Digimon 02 series is the direct sequel to Digimon and takes place three years after the events. Their plot is in turn tri of Digimon Adventure. continued and completed with the film Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna .

In mid-January 2020, Toei Animation announced that it wanted to retell the series under the title Digimon Adventure . The plot should be clearly different from the one from 1999, be set in 2020 and be presented with the same protagonists. The first broadcast began on a weekly basis on April 5th.

Basics

world

The digital world ( Digiwelt ) is a parallel world that was created independently of the Internet from data inside the communication networks of the earth and in which the Digimon , a kind of artificial life form, are at home. Many places in the digital world are named after computer programs and hardware, so two well-known continents in the digital world are called “ folder ” and “ server ”. The city of the eternal beginning is located on the " File Island" and from there the structure of the Digiwelt is held together. The northern, southern, eastern and western regions of the digital world are each represented by one of four sacred animals ( 四 聖 獣 , Shiseijū ) , i.e. Digimon, who ensure the well-being of the Digiwelt.

The transition from organic life to the digiworld is complete. This means that body and mind as well as clothing and luggage - i.e. everything that is worn on the body - are transferred from the human world and vice versa, so that nothing remains in the outgoing world. This also applies to the Digimon, who like humans can be in both worlds. Consistently, suffering injuries or death means that this also applies to the other world. There is no fixed scheme for travel between the worlds. During the action, a total of six transitions take place, which is only enforced once, and that through a ritual.

The time relationships are asynchronous between the human and digi-worlds until the end of the plot . The rule of thumb is that one minute in the human world corresponds to one day in the digiworld. Conversely, one minute in the digiworld takes about 42 milliseconds in the human world. Accordingly, one day in the human world makes up several years in the digiworld. This asynchronicity is caused by the Digimon Apocalymon .

Digimon and technology

Although Digimon were created by digital currents, the Internet and thus electricity, they otherwise have all the characteristics of an organic living being; however, they are unable to reproduce. Orienting towards the theory of evolution , there are rough parallels for the Digimon 's path through life: Although Digimon do not age, they usually stay on it after they have reached a certain stage of development and thus expand their skills and strengths. These developments do not, however, extend over generations, but happen through so-called digitations ( Japanese進化Shinka ) within a life cycle. What is certain is that the life path of a Digimon is the same in almost all cases until it has completed the last digit . However, this does not apply to every Digimon of the same type, as only a comparatively very small number of Digimon exist at the baby level. For example, a pabumon, from which a motimon and then a tentomon - which accompanies Izzy - is created, can assume a completely different developmental course. Furthermore, it is possible that the Pabumon, which accepts MegaKabuterimon in the ultra-level, has gone through different digitations than Izzy's Digimon in its three levels before. Digitations can also be forced, but this is only possible through technology. Forcing digitization can lead to the intended digitization process being interrupted, greatly increasing the likelihood that the affected Digimon will assume a malicious form.

The following acceptable levels are:

  1. Baby ( 幼年期 I , Yōnenki I , "Baby I" )
  2. Training ( 幼年期 II , Yōnenki II , "Baby II" )
  3. Rookie ( 成長期 , Seichōki , "child" or "growth phase " )
  4. Champion ( 成熟期 , Seijukuki , "adult" or "maturity phase" )
  5. Ultra ( 完全 体 , Kanzentai , "perfect" or "perfect" )
  6. Mega ( 究 極 体 , Kyūkyokutai , "Ultimate" or "Final" )

Digimon is not known to have died as a result of old age or other anatomical reasons. It is suggested, however, that various types of Digimon became extinct through general evolution and should have left the Digiworld into a sphere of eternal darkness in which they continue to exist. It is not clear whether this only applies to all Digimon affected in this way. In addition to the extinction of species, it is only possible to do severe violence to a Digimon to make it die. Such Digimon dissolve into data and are thus indirectly immortal, since their memory is not erased either. Your data are automatically transferred to the city of the eternal beginning , materialize there and transform into so-called Digieier and are reborn after an unspecified time. However, this only applies to the Digimon who died in the Digiwelt. Do they lose their lives in the human world, do their souls remain there or dissolve irrevocably.

Furthermore, almost all known Digimon can be assigned to one of the types File , Serum , Virus . The unknown type is also indicated . It is not clear whether the type of Digimon is either not known or actually cannot be assigned to any of the three. File Digimon are mostly neutral and Serum Digimon are basically benign, while Virus Digimon are usually understood as aggressive and sometimes also fundamentally evil. As already described, the characters of the Digimon can also be manipulated by external influences, so that their essence turns to evil.

Each of the eight main human characters has a Digimon as a partner and has a Digivice , which is used to direct his feelings towards the Digimon partner. The partner Digimon digests much faster than conventional ones, but they can only hold their level for a short time before they fall back to the training, rookie or champion level. In the course of the series, the Digimon of the main characters perform the following digitations:

  • Digitation (進化Shinka , "Evolution" )
In normal Digitation, the Digimon rises from baby to training, from this to rookie or from the latter to champion level. For the first two digitations only the time and the physical condition of the digimons play a role. To reach the champion level, however, the human partner must be in danger or both must have great determination.
  • Ultra-Digitation (超 進化Chō Shinka , "Super-Evolution" )
In order to be able to digitize from the champion to the ultra level, the Digimon needs the power of a coat of arms, which the main characters find in the course of the series and one of which is assigned to a Digiritter. In addition, the feeling that the respective coat of arms symbolizes must be very strong in humans and Digimon.
  • Warp Digitation (ワ ー プ 進化Wāpu Shinka , "Warp Evolution" )
In the warp digitation from the rookie to the mega level, the champion and ultra level are skipped. Just like with ultra-digitation, a coat of arms is also required for warp-digitation. However, an old prophecy must also be fulfilled in order to enable the Digimon to perform warp digitation (see plot). Later, this Digitation mostly replaces the Ultra-Digitation for the characters that can perform it.

prehistory

Some years before the action occurs the evil Digimon Apocalymon from beyond the firewall ( firewall in appearance). Its presence is considered so strong that the structure of the Digiwelt has been shaken to its foundations for the first time. Since then, time has passed much faster than in the real world. The Digimon together are unable to face Apocalymon. In order to defeat the enemy, five human children are therefore brought into the Digiwelt, the Digimon partners are given, face Apocalymon and defeat it. After the power of darkness has been defeated, the legend of the Digi Knights ( 選 ば れ し 子 供 , Erabareshi Kodomo , "Chosen Children" ) is known throughout the Digiworld. Since then, a prophecy has promised that a new generation of chosen children will come when the Digiworld finds itself in need again.

In 1995 , the two Digimon Greymon and Parrotmon appeared in Hikarigaoka , a district in Tokyo's Nerima district . Both fought against each other on the street and devastated parts of the district. The children who witnessed the battle at that time were seen from the Digiwelt and their physical data was recorded by an unknown aura - which later turns out to be homeostasis . Hoping the prophecy would come true, this unknown power created the Digivices and prepared everything for the arrival of the children.

action

The time told is the days from August 1st to 3rd, 1999 in the human world. The children Tai Yagami , Matt Ishida , his little brother TK Takaishi , Sora Takenouchi , Izzy Izumi , Joe Kido and Mimi Tachikawa are together at the summer camp. All over the world there are severe weather extremes in this middle of the year, from heavy snow and rainfalls to extreme heat. Suddenly it starts to snow heavily in the summer camp, digivices appear in front of the children and they are transported to the Digiwelt. There they land on File Island , where everyone meets their partner Digimon. Shortly afterwards they are attacked by Kuwagamon , a giant beetle digimon. With the help of the Digivices, your partner Digimon can develop and defeat the enemy. Together they explore File Island and try to find a way back into the human world. Everywhere you come across Digimon who are controlled by black gears . These were created by Devimon , whose plan is to take over the entire Digiwelt. Eventually Devimon can be defeated by the further development of TK's Digimon (Patamon becomes Angemon), which then dies and becomes a Digi-Egg again.

Through the hologram of an old man named Gennai , the digi knights learn that they have to leave for the continent server and free the digiworld from evil if they want to return to the human world. When they arrive on the server , they meet Etemon , a plush creature Digimon who wants to control the Digimon through a dark network . Little by little they find their respective coats of arms, but only Tai manages to use his after overcoming his fears. After defeating Etemon, Tai returns to the human world without the other digi knights, but finds there that Digimon are causing chaos everywhere in the real world. So he returns to the Digiwelt. Due to the time inconsistency between the worlds, several weeks have already passed and his friends have separated after being manipulated by DemiDevimon . While he reunites them, many of the other children also manage to activate their crests.

Now the digi knights learn from Myotismon that it wants to unite the digiworld and the human world, plunge into darkness and rule. When they put it in its castle, it travels into the human world and the digi knights follow it. Now the remaining digi knights, with the exception of TK, succeed in ultra-digitation. In addition, Tai's sister Kari Yagami joins the group as the eighth digi knight and with her Gatomon , who was previously a follower of Myotismon. Together they manage to defeat Myotismon. However, this is reborn as VenomMyotismon directly on the mega-level. Only through the fulfillment of an old prophecy, in which Tai and Matt have to let the Digimon of their siblings (Angemon and Angewomon) shoot them with heavenly arrows, both succeed in warp digitation and thus the victory over VenomMyotismon. Suddenly a crack appears in the sky through which the Digiwelt can be seen. They realize that something bad must have happened there, so the digi knights are returning to the digiworld.

The rift was caused by four mega-level Digimon, who conquered the Digiwelt in the past years due to the time inconsistency, destroyed large parts and set themselves the goal of destroying the Digiritter. The masters of darkness , MetalSeadramon , Puppetmon , Machinedramon and Piedmon seem to be far superior to the digi knights at first, but with united forces they can all be defeated one after the other.

However, the digi knights learn from Gennai that their real enemy is Apocalymon , an outcast Digimon who wants to take revenge on the digi world and the digi knights. It combines the skills of all defeated Digimon in itself and manages to destroy the crests of the children and to turn them and their Digimon into data. But together they regain courage and regain their fighting spirit. Finally, they succeed in ultra- or warp-digitation even without the coat of arms and they defeat Apocalymon. When this strikes out for the last attack, a gigantic explosion, they turn it off with their digivices.

In the almost complete epilogue, they reflect one after the other on their experiences and recognize how much they have grown in their tasks. However, they cannot stay in the DigiWorld because the time is now synchronized with the real world and they are no longer needed in the new DigiWorld. So they say goodbye and go back to the real world without their Digimon. Finally, the narrator explains that there could be children again in the future who will experience adventures in the Digiwelt.

Protagonists

Note: The age information in the German version is partly contradictory and has therefore been replaced by the original. The names of the characters' Digimon partners refer to those of the respective rookie level; at Karis Gatomon it is the champion level.

Tai Yagami ( 八神 太 一 , Yagami Taichi )

Eleven year old Tai is the leader of the digi knights and the big brother of Kari. He is brave, determined and wants to tackle everything immediately, which often puts him and the other digi knights in awkward situations. His coat of arms is that of courage and his Digimon is called Agumon.

Matt Ishida ( 石田 ヤ マ ト , Ishida Yamato )

Matt is eleven years old, reserved and always worried about his brother TK. He often argues violently with Tai when he disagrees. Matt's parents are divorced, he lives with his father, Hiroaki Ishida . His Digimon is Gabumon, his coat of arms that of friendship.

Izzy, despite his age of ten, is the thinker of the group. He is calm, shy, very curious and always has his laptop with him, which he uses to gather information for the group. His birth parents died in an accident and he was later adopted by Masami and Yoshi Izumi . His partner digimon is Tentomon and his coat of arms is that of knowledge.

Mimi Tachikawa ( 太 刀 川 ミ ミ , Tachikawa Mimi )

Joe Kido ( 城 戸 丈 , Kido Jō )

At twelve, Joe is the oldest of the children and therefore more sensible and cautious than the others. He also feels responsible for others. His partner Gomamon, on the other hand, is usually cheeky and cheeky. His coat of arms is that of reliability.

TK Takaishi ( 高 石 タ ケ ル , Takaishi Takeru )

At eight, TK is the baby of the group and Matt's little brother. He lives in a separate household with his brother and father with his mother Natsuko Takaishi . Like him, his Digimon Patamon is quite childish and both tend to hold back in fights, but are always there when everything seems lost. His coat of arms is that of hope.

Kari Yagami ( 八神 ヒ カ リ , Yagami Hikari )

Like TK, Kari is eight years old and Tai's little sister. She only joins the rest of the group in the fight against Myotismon. Her Digimon is Gatomon, her coat of arms that of light.

Antagonists

During the action, the digi knights encounter different adversaries who are stronger and stronger as the story progresses. Some of them do not work together, but pursue similar goals, including the subjugation of the Digiworld and killing the Digiritter and their Digimon.

Devimon

At the beginning of the plot, the Digiritter land on File Island , which is controlled by the champion Digimon Devimon. Devimon inhabits the local mountain of infinity , from the inside of which it emits black gears on the island and the surrounding sea in order to deprive other Digimon of their free will and to let them become evil. His goal is to expand from the island to other areas of the Digiwelt. Devimon's main attack is the death claw ; it attacks its opponents with its hand and absorbs their energy.

When Devimon hears the Digiritter's presence, it pushes ahead with their killing. He succeeds in bending the actually benign Leomon to his will without the gears, so that it keeps fighting against the Digiritter and their Digimon. At his side is Ogremon, who is also a slave to Devimon without manipulation. As the digi knights climb the mountain, Devimon lures them into a trap, which is however exposed early. However, Devimon manages to break the island into several parts through the gears, which are constantly drifting off his mountain. With great effort the Digiritter and other Digimon friends manage to bring the island back together one after the other. When the Digiritter want to face Devimon again, it absorbs its ally Ogremon and can therefore enormously increase its body size and strength. Although only at the champion level, it is vastly superior to the developed Digimon of the Digiritter. Only the first digitization of TK's Patamon to Angemon can Devimon kill, but Angemon uses all his strength and dies himself. As Devimon dissolves, it reveals to the Digimon that far stronger Digimon are waiting for them far from the sea.

As it turns out a little later, Devimon has hidden the amulets under the sea for the crests of the Digi knights, with the help of which Digimon can digitize to a higher level. Since the amulets have already been stolen by the masters of the dark, it can be assumed that Devimon was subordinate to them and acted on their behalf.

Etemon

After the digi knights have reached the continent server , they are confronted with the ultra-Digimon Etemon, who calls himself the king of the Digimon and considers himself the greatest music artist in the world. Thanks to his dark network , he was able to lay cables across the continent and to have knowledge of all relevant events. With the help of the network and supported by a lot of Gazimon, Etemon drives a car that is pulled by a monochrome. Etemon's main attacks are the dark network - which either forms a drawn net that drains energy from Digimon, or it throws an energy ball at its opponents - and the serenade shocker , where it starts a song with high pitched tones that makes Digimon incapable of fighting. This makes it the only antagonist in the series to be attributed two main attacks.

Etemon miscalculates the Digiritter's arrival destination and has to travel to their whereabouts. It attacks them with its serenade shocker, but the digi knights are able to flee. As a result, the Digiritter looks in vain. Since its network is unreliable, it suspects Datamon to be behind the disturbances, which it had defeated in battle some time before and locked in a pyramid. The digi knights also travel to the pyramid to find a coat of arms. There is a fight. After Datamon has been freed, it also fights against Etemon, but is inferior to him. So it destroys its headquarters and gives Etemon and itself into a dark network, which destroys Datamon, but makes Etemon stronger. With the new power, Etemon attacks the Digiritter. So Tais Agumon digits to the ultra-level to MetalGreymon and destroys Etemon's new shape, which is pulled into another dimension. Since it no longer appears, the Digi Knights believe Etemon is defeated.

MetalEtemon

In fact, Etemon has been dragged into another dimension with the network. His body is broken down and put back together countless times there. After a while it digests on the mega-level to MetalEtemon. Its character has not been changed by the digitations, it is still very extroverted and feels superior to others. Its skin is covered with digi-chromium steel , which makes it impossible to wound with physical attacks carried out with other materials. It is driven by revenge on the Digiritter, who now wants to take it off once and for all. Its main attack is the banana peel , with which it throws a banana peel in front of its opponents and they slip. At six, MetalEtemon is the Digimon with the most individually named attacks in the series.

While Mimi, Joe and Ogremon are threatened by Puppetmon, MetalEtemon falls from the sky back onto the Digiwelt. It gets into an argument with the master of darkness by making fun of him. As a result, both fight with each other and the Digiritter and Ogremon flee. After a while Puppetmon notices the disappearance of the Digiritter, loses interest in MetalEtemon and turns his back on him.

Myotismon

After Tai has returned to the Digi World and the seven Digiritter are reunited, they face Myotismon, a Digimon on the Ultra level. His obvious goal is to kill the eighth digi-knight, who is not yet with the rest. Later it reveals to plunge the human world into darkness and then to unite it with the digi-world, which makes it easier for both worlds to be mastered. Ironically, it is Myotismon of all people who, with the transfer of his army from the Digi- to the human world, ensures that the eighth Digiritter and his Digimon are brought together. Myotismon is characterized by a very cool being, it sleeps in a coffin and can usually be transported in a carriage. It is also nocturnal and cannot stand in direct sun, avoids it and moves at most in the shade. At night it drives around Tokyo, sucking the blood of women for pleasure. On the one hand, it shows itself to be extremely cruel to its subordinates, especially in its time in the human world, so it kills three of them when they either abandon their plans or are converted to good by the digi knights. On the other hand, it denies a mass murder of the assembled residents of the Tokyo suburbs when it takes them hostage; this would contradict his “ aesthetic feeling ”. However, it remains to be seen whether it will consider this at a later date. Its main attack is the creepy wings , in which it conjures up countless bats that gnaw at its opponents and can eat them. Myotismon is extremely strong for its level. It is able to repel at least four simultaneous attacks from Ultra-Digimon without damage, but is extremely susceptible to attacks that are based on the power of light.

VenomMyotismon

After the supposed victory of the Digiritter over Myotismon, the latter succeeds - with the remaining powers of his subordinates - to digitize to the mega-level to VenomMyotismon. VenomMyotismon is thus the first Digimon in the series to be shown on the mega-level. Its appearance is based on a prophecy from the Digiwelt, in which u. a. means: “In the beginning the sky was covered with bats. And so the people called for the King of the Digimon. When the clock struck the number of monsters in due course, His exalted majesty appeared. ”This refers in part to the revelation of John in the New Testament of the Bible , in which the number of the beast is given as 666 . In fact, the residents of the suburbs, previously taken hostage by Myotismon, are awakening from unconsciousness and synchronously calling for a sublime master . So at 6:06:06 p.m. a much larger figure appears at the point where Myotismon was defeated. VenomMyotismon is clearly driven by animal instincts and the hunger for further energy, whereby it is tactically not as adept as its ultra-digitation, but compensates for this with its strength and destructiveness; nor does it take any account of its subordinates at the latest now. Its attack is poison infusion , in which it ejects completely dissolving rays from its eyes on its head or in the area of its pelvis.

Even after the Digiritter defeated VenomMyotismon, VenomMyotismon is not dead, but can transform his data into a person, as shown at the end of the Digimon 02 series .

Master of the Dark

The Masters of Darkness are a grouping of four Digimon on the mega-level, which, especially in the time when the Digiritter must assert themselves against Myotismon in the human world, attack the Digiwelt and divide it up among themselves. Since the digi knights stay in the human world for more than two full days, the masters of darkness have several years to carry out their machinations. Although they are only presented in the last third of the plot, they dominate the action even before the Digiritter arrives for the first time in the Digiwelt: They raid a laboratory operated by Gennai, in which the Digieier as well as Digivices and amulets of the Digiritter are stored. So the masters of the dark steal the amulets and Gennai has to flee from his laboratory with the diggers and digivices. After the Digiritters have followed Myotismon into the human world, the masters of darkness begin with the fragmentation of the digiworld: They separate entire stretches of land from one another and bundle them into new areas that are drawn up on the Spiralberg ; only a few areas remain in the rest of the world. Ultimately, they connect the digi and human world to the extent that the other world is visible above the sky, which means that the parents of the digi knights can observe the events in the digi-world for the first time. Each master of darkness controls one of the areas drawn up on the Spiralberg : sea, forest, city and darkness. Each of these areas is largely homogeneous , but can be entered directly from another, provided they are directly opposite one another, there are no artificial borders. The areas of the Spiralberg also seem to have their own gravitation , since despite its continuously curved course there are only very few difficulties when climbing; and only in really mountainous terrain. Furthermore, after its formation , the spiral mountain is able to maintain its statics even without the raised areas. Each of the four areas is tied to the respective life of a master of darkness : If he dies, it is released from the spiral mountain and returned to the Digiwelt. Since the city of Eternal Beginning , which falls in the realm of darkness, has been devastated, deceased Digimon cannot be reborn as eggs; their data is bundled at the top of the spiral mountain. This is where the masters of darkness move into their headquarters and from there gain insights into the human world. The tip forms a ball of rock open at the top, which cannot be reached from the raised areas, or can only be reached by climbing with great effort or from the air. The headquarters has at least two entrances, one of which is on a terrace. Inside there is a telescope, a large water basin and a gorge over which trapezoids are attached. The masters of the dark are Metal Seadramon, Puppetmon, Machinedramon and Piedmon. Although there is no formal hierarchy within the group, Piedmon lists them as the de facto speaker . MetalSeadramon (with the file type ) is the only Digimon in the association that is not of the virus type . They are all considered to be extremely domineering and do not tolerate any contradiction. Each of them commands an army of loyal Digimon, which secures their position of power in the areas, whereby resistance against the power structures is carried out only underground. Furthermore, every Digimon who dares to stand against the masters of the dark faces death.

For the first time after their return from the human world, the digi knights meet the masters of darkness . At first they are not aware of how strong their new opponents are, and they attack with their Digimon on the Champion and Ultra levels, but are thrown back by one of the Masters of Darkness . When they meet the fourth, Piedmon, WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon try their hand at battle, but are also mercilessly inferior; Piedmon claims here that the masters of the dark would have a lot more experience on the mega-level compared to the two Digimon, who only fought at this level for the second time. When Piedmon presented the association as a whole, it threatened the digi knights with death. Chipmon and Piximon come to their aid and both lose their lives. Before doing this, Piximon ensures that the Digiritter and their Digimon are safely brought to the foot of the spiral mountain . Apart from this gig and the raid on Gennai's laboratory, the Masters of Darkness are not working together again and are obviously relying on each other on their respective strengths. Noteworthy here is Piedmon's indirect appeal to Puppetmon after MetalSeadramons death to take care of the Digiritter alone - although one of their members has just been killed - which it even confidently follows.

Metal seadramon

After they seem to have understood the new situation in the Digiwelt in principle, the Digiritter meet MetalSeadramon first of all. It shows itself to be self-confident and very strong in leadership; it rewards its subordinates if they do a good job and punishes them severely if they fail. MetalSeadramon rules over the area of the sea, in which coastal and beach areas are also bundled. Its body is coated with digi-chromium steel , which makes it impossible to wound with physical attacks carried out with other materials. He is subordinate to the deep server army , which - like itself - consists of Digimon of the file type , which are either located in water or sand areas. Why MetalSeadramon is the only Digimon that is not of the virus type to belong to the masters of the dark is not explained. Its main attack is the flow of power , in which it emits a beam of energy from an opening on its head.

After the digi knights flee from the masters of darkness, they first arrive in the area of the sea. MetalSeadramon takes the initiative and has his subordinate, Scorpiomon, set a trap that is supposed to lure the Digiritter and their Digimon into a house and lock them up in order to then burn them. This works only partially, Joey and Mimi with their Digimon escape the action. MetalSeadramon instructs Scorpiomon to take care of the remaining Digiritter, but this fails. Instead, the other digi knights can escape from the house on fire. MetalSeadramon then puts it on the open sea, where it is considered invincible. Whamon comes to the aid of the digi knights, who can fight back the metal seadramon and escape with the digi knights. On their escape, they are pursued by several divermons, which Whamon, however, can largely render harmless in the deep sea; only MetalSeadramon can follow it. In the ensuing fight, WarGreymon faces the master of darkness. The Digiritter had previously learned that his megaclaw could cut through the digi-chrome steel on MetalSeadramon's body. However, MetalSeadramon shifts the fight underwater, which threatens to defeat WarGreymon. Whamon comes to WarGreymon's aid, but is fatally injured by the Master of Darkness. WarGreymon seizes his chance through the distraction and executes his megaclaw , which MetalSeadramon can no longer fight off and which pierces its whole body, whereby it dies.

Puppetmon

Although the Digiritter are only the third to encounter Puppetmon, this is the second master of darkness they have to face on the Spiral Mountain . Puppetmon has a very childlike and ungrateful character with a lack of intelligence. So it does not tolerate any contradiction and usually punishes this and supposed lies with death. In addition, it looks for playmates for situations in which it deliberately accepts that they will lose their lives in the process; obviously nobody wants to be friends with him either. In his house he can monitor most of the movements in his area via a television and move parts of it using a remote control. It rules over the area of the forest, which mainly contains deciduous forests and jungles . The grouping of his army does not officially have a name, its members are mainly plant and animal-like Digimon. Its main attack is the doll's hammer, where it either hits the ground with a hammer and releases a wave of energy or holds the hammer and releases fragments of energy from it at its opponents.

Machinedramon

The second master of darkness the digi knights encounter is Machinedramon. It has a very cool character and is extremely tactical. It also demands absolute obedience and unconditional loyalty from its subordinates. Piedmon describes it as "a perfect machine without feelings" that lives "only for the destruction of [its] opponents". Machinedramon heads the Great Imperial Metal Army, which includes mostly machine-like Digimon, but also some of the Virus type . Its dominated area is that of the cities, to which almost all urban areas of the Digiwelt and paved roads belong. Furthermore, it has a base in a metropolitan area, which is an empty city, which is composed of several metropolises of the human world (including New York City , Paris and Rome ). This city also has a developed underground, in which u. a. Numemon can be used for energy backup. Its main attack is the giant cannon , where it fires energy from the two cannons on its back.

For the sick Kari, Tai and Izzy look for a drug at Machinedramon's base. To find such a means, Izzy logs into the city's network via his laptop and searches for hospitals and pharmacies, whereby Machinedramon takes notice of the presence of the Digiritter. So it sends its soldiers to the possible places. When Izzy logs into the system again in a hospital, Machinedramon orders a targeted attack on the location, but Izzy and Tai are able to escape. Again Izzy logs in, this time in a skyscraper, to determine the positions of Machindramon's soldiers, which also reveals the position of the Digiritter; Izzy recognizes that they can be identified at any time. There is another fight and the escape of the digi knights. Izzy then manages to fool the system, whereby Machinedramon orders the destruction of the entire city by his strongest followers Megadramon and Gigadramon. Although all digi knights escape the inferno, Machinedramon can finally locate them and chase them into a high-rise that causes it to collapse. As a result, the digi knights, who are separated from each other by the collapse, enter the underworld of the base. Sora, TK and the weakened Kari have to assert themselves against WaruMonzaemon, who misused thousands of Numemon to power the city's energy supply. The digi knights free Numemon and defeat WaruMonzaemon, who then pleadingly turns to Machinedramon to help him; however, Machinedramon kills it because of its supposed uselessness. Meanwhile, Tai and Izzy meet Andromon from the power station on the Filinsel, which has been resisting Machinedramon's machinations for a long time. Shortly afterwards, the separated digi knights reunite, which, however, also leads the master of darkness to them. Andromon and most of the digi knights oppose him, but are successively defeated by Machinedramon, who is now close to his final blow. The previously rescued Numemon come to the aid of the digi knights, who attack Machinedramon a thousand times over, but are immediately killed. Kari, who was shrouded in a bright, powerful light when she was saved, faints as a result, but gives Tais Agumon the necessary strength to digitize into WarGreymon. This attacks Machinedramon with all his might and he manages to cut the master of darkness into several parts, whereby he falls apart.

Piedmon

Piedmon is considered the unofficial leader and strongest of the masters of the dark. For its three partners it observes the movements of the digi knights in the human world and coordinates the attack on them after their return. In the Digiwelt it is considered by all masters of the dark to be "strongest and most vicious", no other member does Digimon talk about with more fear; however, it is also the only one in the group who does not kill any of its subordinates. It is dominant, but mostly calm and cynical in relation to its partners; it also likes to play with its opponents. So it allows itself to have fun with its first appearance in front of the Digirittern, disguises itself as a seemingly friendly clown and tells them a story about their imminent death. It continues to play in combat with its opponents and makes fun of them. It dominates the area of darkness, which besides some mountain ranges has no clear structure except for barren, fallow tracts of land which are bathed in a dark gray; also the city of the Eternal Beginning , which has been destroyed and in which no more Digimon can be reborn, is subordinate to him. According to all representations of the spiral mountain, as long as it is completely intact, this area is covered by the other three. Piedmon commands the army of nightmare soldiers , to which - as far as is known - only Digimon of the virus type belong. While the other masters of darkness are fighting the Digiritter, Piedmon observes the events on the Spiralberg, obviously consuming alcoholic beverages and waiting for the Digiritter to have reached the top of the Spiralberg. This makes it the only master of darkness who does not face the digi knights in his territory. Piedmon's main attack is the trump card , in which it hurls the four swords on its back at its opponents.

Waiting so far on the top of the spiral mountain, Piedmon notices the arrival of the Digiritter and sends LadyDevimon into the fight, which is quickly defeated. Eventually, Piedmon himself goes into battle from his headquarters, where it faces WarGreymon alone. It quickly becomes clear that Piedmon is superior to WarGreymon in terms of agility and strength and can seriously injure and incapacitate. When it wants to face the two remaining digi knights, Matt as well as Joey, Sora and TK return, whereby Matt's Digimon manages to completely heal WarGreymon and to join the fight against Piedmon as MetalGarurumon. Against two Digimon on the mega-level, Piedmon can hardly hold its own. When the digi knights decide to fight Piedmon together, it takes a white silk scarf with which it reveals the two mega-level Digimon and then their partners and as defenseless key rings. The Digiritter and their Digimon flee to the headquarters of the Masters of Darkness to avoid being transformed; Piedmon follows them and turns them into key rings one after the other, until only TK, Patamon and Kari remain. On a balcony and while the digi knights try to escape on a rope, Angemon fights against Piedmon, where Angemon is defeated, thrown from the balcony and falls to the ground. Piedmon eventually cuts the rope as well, causing the digi knights to fall. In the last moment before the impact, Angemon manages the ultra-digitation to MagnaAngemon, rescues the Digiritter and confronts Piedmon, who fails to transform it too, and is repulsed. After all Digiritter and their partners have been transformed back, Piedmon returns with hundreds of Vilemon. However, neither these nor Piedmon himself can defend themselves against the Digimon of the Digiritter and their new allies. MagnaAngemon initiates his Heavenly Gate attack that traps and buries all Vilemon in the room beyond. WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon attack Piedmon one last time, causing it to fall through Heaven's Gate as well. Through Piedmon's banishment, the overwhelming power of darkness is overcome and the last area of the spiral mountain is returned to the Digiwelt.

Apocalymon

Behind the machinations of the masters of darkness is Apocalymon, who endowed the group with the forces that enable the reorganization and bundling of the areas of the Digiwelt. It belongs to those Digimon who died out due to the digitations of other Digimon, had to leave the Digiwelt and were banished in a room, the Eternal Darkness , behind the wall of fire . There they are permanently exposed to darkness, pain and suffering, while the Digimon who remained in the Digiwelt could have continued to exist in better circumstances. Apocalymon is extremely bitter because of these circumstances and seeks revenge on the current Digirittern and their Digimon. It has set itself the goal of throwing the Digiwelt into chaos and making it habitable for its fellow sufferers. About Apocalymon it is said that it could “cause disturbances in the world through its mere presence” and it has not been fully clarified whether it is a Digimon at all. The greatest outgrowth of these disturbances is the disproportionate harmony of the time courses of the digital and human world, in which a past minute in the human world corresponds to a whole day in the digital world. Apocalymon had ravaged the Digiwelt well before the arrival of the current digi knights and had already massively disrupted the structure of the world. Since the Digimon were powerless against it, other digi knights were called in, who finally banished Apocalymon and his henchmen from the digiworld. Apocalymon is on the mega-level, its type is unknown. Its main attack is the dark zone , in which it recites a formula, converts any form of structure into data and then transfers it to nothing . Furthermore, with a total of eight tentacles, Apocalymon has the ability to carry out the attacks of the previous antagonists of the Digiritter, making it the Digimon with the most abilities in the series. In addition, it has strong regenerative powers, which it demonstrates after self-harm.

On September 27, 2017 it was announced that Tele 5 will broadcast the series again on free TV after more than six years.

Changes in international broadcasts

The series was heavily edited in many of the countries where it was broadcast. In the US version, many of the Japanese names were Anglicized or abbreviated to Western nicknames by the former dubbing studio Saban Entertainment. Scenes that either contain violence or appear insignificant have been cut and dialogues and names have been changed. Furthermore, the original background music was removed and replaced with original compositions.

The German version was based on the Japanese original. Neither dialogues nor scenes were shortened or edited. For marketing reasons, however, the Anglicised names had to be used, which were specified by the Munich licensor CTM Concept-TV & Merchandising.

synchronization

The German version of the television series was provided with German-language dialogues by the Berlin studios of MME Studios GmbH on behalf of RTL II .

Adaptations

cinemamovies

Tōei Animation produced two feature films for the series. Mamoru Hosoda acted as director in both films . Both stories take place in the same universe of the first two Digimon series and are plot-dependent.

Digimon

The first film of the same name takes up the events in Hikarigaoka, where Tai and the other Digiritter first came into contact with Digimon in 1995. The film was released in Japanese cinemas on March 6, 1999.

Bokura no War Game!

The second film to the series takes place after the end of the series and is about an evil Digimon who gets into the Internet and tries to detonate nuclear missiles on Japan. The film was released in Japanese cinemas on March 4, 2000.

Radio plays

Four radio plays have also been released on CD in Japan . They contain short stories that relate to the chosen children. They are told by the respective voice actors who act out a production .

Digimon Adventure Character Song + Mini Drama 2

This radio play (code: NECA-30009) is about a love letter written by Koushiro. Throughout the play, the other chosen children and their Digimon partners try to find out to whom this letter is addressed. Mimi, Sora, and Hikari are curious and even argue about whether Koushiro is addressing the letter to them. The story consists of the three parts Kōshirō, Ai no Yukue Fumei , Mimi, Jiishiki Kajou de Sekai Seifuku and Hikari, Kyojaku Taishitsu! .

Digimon Adventure Original Story 2nen han no Kyuuka

This radio play (code: NECA-30081) focuses on the two and a half years between Digimon and Digimon 02 . The CD contains short stories about the characters.
In 1999, 11gatsu Whistle , a digital gate opens and allows Tai to get in touch with Agumon briefly. The sound of the whistle, which his sister left behind in the digital world with Tailmon, alerted him to the need to open the gate.
In 2000nen 5gatsu Denwa Jō confides in his eldest brother Shin with the fact that he finally wanted to become a doctor because he felt the desire to do something about the suffering he had seen in the Digiworld.
In 2000nen 10gatsu Chichi e no Tegami , Sora writes about Jō's second oldest brother Shuu , who previously studied medicine and has now decided to take part in the mythology class of her father, Professor Haruhiko Takenouchi. She also writes that her mother is teaching her to play tennis and that she will soon be taking a trip to Kyoto.
In 2001nen 4gatsu Chat , Kōshirō and Gennai talk to each other by email. He makes a comment on Gennai's “rejuvenation” and explains that there are more chosen children around the world. In addition, he would like to know how the battle between Greymon and Parrotmon in 1995 came about.
In 2001nen 9gatsu Video Mail , Mimi recently moved to New York . She reports in great detail about her experiences with the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , and that she came across other chosen people who helped clear the gravel. In addition, there are also character songs sung by the seiyū, which are sold as albums and single CDs in addition to the opening and closing credits of the anime. A soundtrack CD Digimon - TV Soundtrack Vol. 1 was released in German-speaking countries . This album, released on November 10, 2000, also includes some specially produced songs and was licensed by CTM Concept-TV & Merchandising and distributed by BMG Ariola, now Sony Music . The pieces are produced by Arts of Toyco .

Novels

The Japanese publisher Shūeisha published three novels on the series between April and July 2001 under the label Super Dash Bunko , which were written by the director Hiroyuki Kakudou and the screenwriter Hiro Masaki . In contrast to the anime, the thoughts of the characters, their backgrounds and other details are told in detail. The series runs under the title Shousetsu DIGIMON ADVENTURE ( 小説 デ ジ モ ン ア ド ベ ン チ ャ ー ). The titles of the three novels are Ima, Bouken ga Hajimaru ( い ま 、 冒 険 が は じ ま る ), 8 Ninme no Erabareshi Kodomo ( 8 人 目 の 選 ば れ し 子 ど も ) and Bouken wa Mada Owaranai ( 冒 険 い ら 終 険 は ら だ 終 険 は だ 終 険 は ).

Manhua

Yuen Wong Yu drew a Manhua adaptation for the television series. The series comprises five volumes. The stories are shortened compared to the anime, although events turn out differently in rare cases.

The Hong Kong publisher Rightman Publishing published all five anthologies in Cantonese in 2001 using traditional Chinese characters.

The first English-language version was published by Chuang Yi Publishing, which is based in Singapore , for the Southeast Asian region.
The US publisher Tokyopop brought out her English version, translated by Lianne Sentar, in 2003 on the North American market.

  26. The portrayal of this fact is imprecisely expressed in the anime. At the end of the plot, Gennai explains that Apocalymon's appearance has restored the time structure between the digi and human world (in the original in German, "In fact, Apocalymon's appearance has brought the time flow between the digi-world and [the human world] back into line."). This would mean that the flow of time had already been disturbed before Apocalymon's work. No adequate explanation is given for this. Only Apocalymon's physical appearance through the wall of fire could explain the condition that the harmonization has been restored and taken over into the newly created Digiworld. The plot does not offer a precise explanation.
  27. The term dark zone is only used in the anime to represent the character, Apocalymon himself does not use it when carrying out his attacks. In the Japanese original, there is a short explanation by the narrator at the performance describing the execution of the attack.
