Leiji Matsumoto ( Japanese 松本 零 士 , Matsumoto Reiji ; born January 25, 1938 in Kurume ) is a pseudonym of the Japanese mangaka and director Akira Matsumoto ( 松本 あ き ら , Matsumoto Akira ), who is best known for his large number of space operas . He made his debut as a professional manga artist in 1953, at the age of 15, with Mitsubachi no Bōken in the manga magazine Manga Shōnen , for which Osamu Tezuka also worked. While he initially only drew shōjo manga for girls, he switched to the genre of shōnen manga in the 1960s . These were mostly about science fiction and became great successes, which were often filmed in anime . He directed some of the films himself or took on other production tasks.

Interstella 5555 - The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem , an anime implementation of the music of the French formation Daft Punk - was created in 2003 based on an idea by Matsumoto .
