One day he saves the life of a cat and makes the acquaintance of the beautiful Yayoi Yukino , the daughter of a noodle restaurant owner. When Hajime's parents were killed in a mysterious explosion, he went on to live with his uncle, Prof. Amamori, the director of the Tsukuba observatory . There he meets Yayoi again, who works as an assistant for Prof. Amamori in the observatory.

Hajime learns about the latest discovery there: An unknown planet is approaching Earth and is expected to meet it on September 9, 1999. Humanity seems to be helpless at the mercy of this catastrophe. The television series was produced in 1981 and 1982 based on the manga and directed by Nobutaka Nishizawa . After being broadcast by the Japanese television station Fuji TV in the same two years (April 16, 1981 to May 23, 1982), it was also sold abroad due to its great success, including to Spain, France, Italy, Mexico, China and Germany.

In Germany, The Queen of a Thousand Years ran for the first time in March 1991 on the Munich private broadcaster Tele 5 as part of the children's program Bim Bam Bino . The dubbed version only consisted of 41 episodes, as one episode had been left out, which in the Japanese original, after the first three quarters of the series, summarized the previous plot with familiar images. The second and so far last broadcast in Germany took place from April 27, 1992 to June 23, 1992. In the same year, Tele 5 ceased broadcasting, and the series has not been shown on German television since then. Despite this relatively short appearance, the series achieved cult status among German anime fans that continues to this day.

The English version of the series, which was released in the USA in 1985, is a compilation with the series Captain Harlock under the title Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years .

On June 21, 2005, the complete TV series was released as a DVD box in Japan. The set includes 6 DVDs and a bonus CD with the soundtrack of the series and the film. So far nothing is known about a publication in Germany.

Anime feature film

On March 13, 1982, a 121-minute movie was released in Japan, directed by Masayuki Akihi , which tells the plot of the series in a modified form. Some characters have been left out, others have been added, and the character design of the film also shows changes compared to the series. The music comes from Kitarō , the soundtrack released in 1982 is called Queen Millennia . The film was never released in Germany.

Others

  • Daischi , Yayoi's cat, was originally named Leiji , named after Leiji Matsumoto , the father of the series.
  • With his film Maetel Legend , which was released in 2000, Leiji Matsumoto tried to build a bridge between the Queen of the 1000 Years and the Harlock universe away from the American compilation. The film is neither a sequel nor a spin-off of the original series, but offers a completely alternative story that has nothing in common with the main characters (the Queen and Hajime).
