In the distant future, the earth is highly technical and space travel is well developed. But people have become comfortable, selfish and lazy. A computer determines who has what value in society. The few who oppose this and see humanity degenerating without their own initiative are fought as troublemakers. So does Captain Harlock, who as a pirate causes trouble with his spaceship Arcadia. His team includes the navigator and scientist Kei Yūki ( 有 紀 蛍 ), the extraterrestrial Mīme ( ミ ー erste ), the first mate and model building freak Yattaran, the ship's doctor Dr. Zero and many others who have said goodbye to their old life on earth.

When a celestial body hits the earth and attacks are carried out on important people at the same time, Harlock is accused of being responsible. The celestial body is a base of the alien mazons, as the scientist Professor Tsuyoshi Daiba finds out, with which the invasion of the mazons is announced. The attacks are also carried out by Mazone who are already on earth. But nobody believes him, except Harlock. Finally, Daiba is also killed and his son, 14-year-old Tadashi Daiba ( 台 羽 正 ), joins Harlock's team to defeat the Mazones and protect the earth with Harlock. As it soon turns out, the Mazones consider Earth their second home and are on their way to it after their own home planet has been destroyed. The earth was chosen as their second home a long time ago and Mazones have lived among the people on earth since the time of the early advanced civilizations, bringing their culture and technology with them. All of the Mazone warriors are female and of beautiful human shape. If the plant-like beings are killed, they burn up.

In addition to fighting the Mazone outposts on Earth, Harlock continues to be hunted by the Earth Government. This also uses the girl Mayu Ōyama ( 大 山 ま ゆ ), whose father Tochiro Ōyama was Harlock's best friend. Tochiro Ōyama also constructed the Arcadia and has lived on in its computer since his death, giving the ship a soul. Harlock has promised Tochiro to protect Mayu and that she lives on earth. So the government, especially Commander Mitsuru Kiruda, tries to capture Harlock with the help of Mayu and other tricks. However, Kiruda is also becoming more and more frustrated by the selfishness of the politicians who command him, especially the president, who is only interested in dog racing and golf and winning the next election.

After Harlock repeatedly won battles against the Mazones, the main fleet of the Mazones under Queen Rafflesia is approaching. Harlock wants to attack Rafflesia directly, but Rafflesia can initially prevent this through various counter attacks and traps. She tries to find out as much as possible about the Arcadia and its crew, but the goal is often to kill Harlock as well. But the failures also lead to disputes among the Mazones. Finally, she even goes so far as to have Mayu kidnapped into the distant Horsehead Nebula. But there, too, Harlock is finally victorious and then faces her fleet. At the same time, Kiruda has also become convinced of the threat posed by the Mazones and supports Harlock, but soon dies in battle. Finally, with a few military tricks, Harlock can defeat the overwhelming fleet of the Mazone alone with the Arcadia, the crew penetrates the space ship Rafflesias and takes them. So the queen gives up and withdraws.

Despite the victory, the Earth Government is ungrateful and sends Harlock away. But shortly afterwards the base of the Mazons on Earth becomes active and the Mazons of the Earth rise. Harlock can eventually defeat them too, but large parts of the earth and modern civilization are destroyed. A new, happier society will soon emerge from the ruins.

Conception

The events around the striking heavenly body and Tadashi Daiba's father first introduce the plot, the most important characters up to Mayu are presented. In the following individual, episodic adventures and battles, the story of a member of Harlock's team or a character trait of Harlock is examined in more detail, later also the past of Harlock and the Arcadia. Finally, the battle against the main Mazone fleet and defeating the aliens forms a final arc of the story.
