The film premiered on September 3, 2013 at the Venice International Film Festival , was released four days later in Japanese cinemas and had its video premiere in Germany on August 22, 2014.

action

In the distant future, mankind has colonized countless planets with spaceships faster than light, but their resources have been used up and only the earth itself still seems to enable permanent life. But she has too little space for everyone. A merciless, long "homeland war" broke out, from which a totalitarian government ( Gaia Sanction ) emerged. Since then the earth has been a forbidden sanctuary for all, peace is permanent. Only the space pirate Captain Harlock and his crew successfully fight against entire government space fleets on the Arcadia spacecraft . The technology of an almost extinct alien race makes them immortal and their spaceship invincible.

The film story begins a hundred years later. The fleet commander Isora Daiba smuggles his younger brother Yama into the pirate's team as an agent. Isora has been paraplegic and deeply bitter since an accident caused by Yama. As a result, Yama experiences conflicts of loyalty. On the one hand, aware of his guilt, he feels obliged to his brother despite his coldness. But on board the Arcadia he quickly befriends the crew, which consists of very different characters; Among them are the fat, strong mate Yattaran and the beautiful navigator Kei. Yama is also impressed by the heroism and loyalty of the captain. When Harlock exposes him as an agent, but lets him decide freely, Yama interrupts contact with his commanding agent - now he is a pirate himself.

Later, however, he learns of Harlock's grand plan: the pirate has stolen 100 warheads, which he is now distributing in the universe. If they ignite at the same time, the space-time structure would be destabilized and a new big bang would be triggered. Then a new humanity should develop that would not repeat the mistakes of the old. Yama cannot accept this cataclysm . He changes sides again and helps his brother to board the Arcadia and arrest the pirates.

Isora's plan worked. Now he reveals to Yama the dark shared secret of the pirate and the government: Harlock once tried to prevent corrupt members of Gaia Sanction from colonizing the "holy" earth by using his alien weapon ; thereby the terrestrial biosphere was destroyed. The government is keeping this a secret in its own interest and has been using holographic satellites to show mankind an image of an undestroyed earth for a hundred years. Harlock never speaks of it either; his feelings of guilt cause him to strive for a radical "fresh start".

In the climax of the film, Yama frees the prisoners shortly before their execution and convinces everyone that the centenary secret must be given up. The Arcadia flies to earth and destroys the hologram satellites despite massive resistance. Isora's flagship Oceanos boarded the pirate ship, a man-to-man fight ensued. At the same time, the cornered government is trying to destroy the entire earth, including both ships, with a super weapon. Isora can prevent that. While the Arcadia makes an emergency landing on earth, the two brothers finally meet; Isora dies in Yama's arms.

Finally, alien technology ensures that crew and ship are restored; the Arcadia resumes its fight. Yama is now her first officer. He had found living flowers on earth. Life seems to be recovering, Harlock's "new beginning" can be postponed. But the bombs are in place and the pirates have the detonator - just in case.

You can even forgive the fact that the story is told in a somewhat complicated way, although it actually comes across as simple. "
