Ichirō Nagai

Ichirō Nagai ( Japanese 永 井 一郎 , Nagai Ichirō ; born May 10, 1931 in Ikeda ; † January 27, 2014 in Naka-ku , Hiroshima ) was a Japanese voice actor ( seiyū ).

Life

Ichirō Nagai studied French literature at the University of Tokyo . After graduating, he joined the advertising agency Dentsū , but then took acting classes . He had his first extra roles in 1960 in the films The Tomb of the Sun and Night and Fog over Japan by Nagisa Ōshima, with whom he made friends while studying. However, he quickly switched to dubbing, with his first role in 1962 as King Achmed in the anime film Arabian Nights: Sindbad no Bōken ( ア ラ ビ ア ン ナ イ ト シ ン ド バ ッ ド の 冒 険 , Arabian Naito: Sindobaddo no Bōken ). His first major role in an anime series was that of Dr. Hanamaru in the adaptation of the manga Big X by Osamu Tezuka . He mainly worked as an anime voice actor ( seiyū ), also as a dubbing voice for foreign films. He was the voice of Yoda in the Star Wars films and Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films .

In Japan he is best known for his role as Namihei Isono, in the anime series Sazae-san , which has been running since 1969 , but also for Cherry in Urusei Yatsura and Happosai in Ranma ½ .

He was under contract first with the artist agency Gekidan Sankikai, then with Haikyō , Dōjinsha Productions, Tōkyō Artist Pro and finally with Aoni Production . For his services he received the Seiyū Award in 2009 and the Award of Merit of the Tōkyō Kokusai Anime Fair in 2011 .

After 44 years of activity as a voice actor, Ichirō Nagai died on January 27, 2014 of coronary artery disease . He left his wife Ayako ( 彩 子 ).
