The first 17 episodes are based on the first book The Wizard of Oz by Lyman Frank Baum. Episode 18 to 30 of the book In the Realm of the Wizard Oz , Episode 31 to 41 of the book Princess Ozma of Oz, and Episode 42 to 52 of the book Dorothy in the Emerald City . The series has been slightly changed from the original and further adventures have been added.
After a violent cyclone, the orphan Dorothy and his dog Toto are whirled into a land behind the rainbow. She soon finds out that only the Wizard of Oz can help her find her way back home. However, since he lives in the city of emeralds, she has a long way to go. On her way she meets a scarecrow, a tin man and a lion who accompany her on her way. They too have wishes for the magician. The tin man wants a heart, the scarecrow a mind and the lion wants courage.
Production and publication
The series was produced by Panmedia in Japan in 1984 . This resulted in 52 episodes, directed by Hiroshi Saitō and Masaru Tonogouchi . The character design was created by Shūichi Seki and the responsible producer was Tetsurō Kumase .
Since the broadcaster NHK , which had commissioned the series, no longer wanted to broadcast it, it was only shown two years later from October 6, 1986 by Tokyo 12 and TV Tokyo . The last two episodes were merged into a single, long episode. At the same time, the series was released on video cassettes, with 90 minutes each cut together. The version was also released on commercial media before it was broadcast in Japan on television in the United States. The German first broadcast took place in 1997 on RTL II . The anime has also been shown on French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Polish, and Filipino television.
