The Wizard and the Bandits ( Japanese 少年 猿 飛 佐 助 , Shōnen Sarutobi Sasuke ) is a Japanese anime film from 1959. It was directed by Taiji Yabushita and was produced by Tōei Animation .

The boy Sasuke lives with his older sister, in friendship with the fawn Ricky, Koro the bear, the monkey Kiki and other animals, peacefully in a forest in medieval Japan. This idyll is suddenly disturbed by the evil witch Yaksha. She has teamed up with Gonkuro, the robber chief, and threatens the peace of the country. After losing a fight against her, Sasuke decides to learn the magic trade in order to defeat the witch and sets off on his adventurous journey. Soon afterwards he meets an old magician disguised as a hermit, with whom he learned magic in three years of hard training. Prince Yukimura , who meanwhile pursues the band of robbers because they have sacked several villages, passes the hut of Sasuke's sister and falls in love with her. Shortly afterwards, the bandits learned of Yukimura's stay with her and burned her hut down. However, with the help of the animals, Sasuke's sister manages to escape into the forest, where she is hiding for the time being. After Sasuke learns enough to fight the witch, he makes his way home. Once there, he finds out what has happened and joins the prince to fight Yaksha and the band of robbers together. After a bitter fight they finally defeat the witch and Sasuke is allowed to serve at Yukimura's court from now on.

The title song Magic Boy can be heard in the German version in English, the rest of the songs in the film - the song of the robbers, that of the witch, etc. - have been left in the Japanese original. The German version from 1961 has well-known dubbing voices of the time, and apart from age-related defects in the sound quality, it is exceptionally well done. Other titles of the film for the English market were Magic Boy and The Adventures of the little Samurai .

The film was shown in German cinemas for the first time in 1961, making it the first anime film to be shown in Germany. He was often seen on German television in the run-up to Christmas and during similar holidays. The Wizard and the Bandits first appeared on DVD on February 15, 2010.
