In the distant future, the development of technology has made it possible to create an interstellar railroad network that connects all of the major civilized planets . In addition, it is possible to replace parts of the human body with mechanical elements, making eternal life possible for those who can afford it. The poor can neither afford a mechanical body nor the unaffordable train tickets to other planets to seek their fortune by emigrating, and are therefore forced to live a hard life.
The main character of the film is the orphan boy Tetsuro Hoshino, who lives in the slums of Megalopolis, the futuristic capital of the world.
