Rintaro

Rintaro ( Japanese り ん た ろ う , Rintarō ; born January 22, 1941 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese anime director. His actual name is Shigeyuki Hayashi (Japanese 林 重 行 , Hayashi Shigeyuki ). After graduating from middle school, Rintaro began working as an animator for Toei Animation in 1958 . There he was involved in numerous anime, for example Tale of a White Snake (1958). In 1963, Rintaro moved to the anime studio Mushi Production , where he worked on anime like Astro Boy and Kimba, the white lion . He left Mushi Production in the late 1960s.

In 1972 Rintaro founded the anime studio Madhouse together with several other former Mushi production employees, Masao Maruyama, Osamu Dezaki and Yoshiaki Kawajiri .

Rintaro directed the anime television series Kum-Kum from 1975-1976 and in 1978, again for Toei Animation, with Captain Harlock . The following year, Rintaro also shot his first anime feature film for Toei, Galaxy Express 999 , which, like Captain Harlock, adapted a manga by Leiji Matsumoto . Rintaro also directed its 1981 sequel, Adieu Galaxy Express 999 .

The most important later anime Rintaro include the anthology film Neo Tokyo (Project Team Argus / Madhouse 1987, segment "Labyrinth Labyrinthos"), the films The Dagger of Kamui (Madhouse 1985) and Metropolis (Madhouse 2001), as well as the original video animations Final Fantasy (Madhouse 1994) and Doomed Megalopolis (Madhouse 1991-1992).

In 2002 Rintaro revisited the story of Leiji Matsumoto's space pirate Captain Harlock with the 13-part OVA Space Pirate Captain Herlock: The Endless Odyssey (Madhouse). Rintaro's last full-length animated film to date is Yona Yona Penguin (2009), a computer-animated children's film produced by Madhouse .

In addition to his work as an anime director and animator, Rintaro also worked as an anime producer. The most important anime he has produced or co-produced include the feature film Toki no Tabibito: Time Stranger (Madhouse 1986, director: Mori Masaki ) and the television series Reign: The Conqueror , also known as Alexander (Madhouse / DR Movie 1999, director: Yoshinori Kanemori).

Rintaro's brother Masayuki Hayashi is also an anime director.
