Yoshiaki Kawajiri

Yoshiaki Kawajiri ( Japanese 川 尻 善昭 , Kawajiri Yoshiaki ; born November 18, 1950 in Yokohama , Japan ) is a Japanese anime director.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1968, he started working as an animator for Mushi Production . There he was involved in the television series Dororo (1969) and Ashita no Joe (1970–1971). In 1972 Kawajiri founded the anime studio Madhouse together with several other former Mushi production employees, Masao Maruyama, Osamu Dezaki and Rintaro . In 1984 he made his directorial debut (together with Kazuyuki Hirokawa) with the movie Lensman (Japanese SF 新 世紀 レ ン ズ マ ン, SF Shinseiki Renzuman ). Kawajiri's 1987 film Wicked City (Japanese 妖 獣 都市, Yōjū toshi ) is his first of several adaptations of Hideyuki Kikuchi's novels. 1987 Kawajiri participated with the short film "The traveling man" (Japanese. 走 る 男, Hashiru otoko ) in the anthology film Neo Tokyo (Japanese. 迷宮 物語, Meikyū monogatari ).

Other significant anime Kawajiris are the original video animations Hell City Shinjuku (Japanese 魔界 都市 〈新宿〉, Makaitoshi Shinjuku ) from 1988 and Goku Midnight Eye (Japanese ゴ ク ウ, Gokū ) from 1989 and its sequel Goku Midnight Eye 2 from 2000 , the OVA series Cyber ​​City Oedo 808 (1990-1991), the first segment of the anthology film The Cockpit from 1994, the movies Ninja Scroll (Japanese 獣 兵衛 忍 風 帖, Jūbei ninpūchō ) from 1993 and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust from 2000, the television series X (Japanese エ ッ ク ス, Ekkusu ) from 2001 and the segments “Program” (direction and screenplay) and “World Record” (only screenplay) of the anthology film Animatrix from 2003. For some of these anime like Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust also wrote the script for Kawajiri. He was also one of the three scriptwriters of the 1990 film A Wind Named Amnesia (Japanese 風 の 名 は ア ム ネ ジ ア, Kaze no na wa amunejia ), also based on a novel by Hideyuki Kikuchi, directed by Kazuo Yamazaki .

Kawajiri's style is characterized by a gloomy atmosphere and an orientation towards an adult audience.

In recent years, Kawajiri's involvement in anime productions has been limited to storyboarding instead of directing, for example for individual episodes of Btoom! (2012), Chihayafuru (2013), One Punch Man (2015) and Overlord (2015).
