Sailor Moon Crystal is the second anime series and overall the third series based on the manga series Sailor Moon by the Japanese artist Naoko Takeuchi . This anime was produced as part of the 20th anniversary of the Sailor Moon franchise. It consists of three seasons with 39 episodes.

The first two seasons, in which the first Arc Dark Kingdom and the second Arc Black Moon were adapted, were broadcast as web anime on the video platform Nico Nico Douga . A third season, adapting the third Arc Infinity , aired on Japanese television from April to June 2016 as Death Busters Arc .

In contrast to the first anime, Sailor Moon Crystal is completely without fill episodes, since the template has already been completed. Sailor Moon Crystal is a reinterpretation of the manga and is therefore more oriented towards it.

content

Usagi Tsukino is a normal 14-year-old girl who was a bit clumsy up until the point when she met the talking cat Luna. Luna explains to her that Usagi is Sailor Moon and has to fight against evil. As Sailor Moon, Usagi now fights the forces of evil and finds more comrades. Together with Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury), Rei Hino (Sailor Mars), Makoto Kino (Sailor Jupiter) and Minako Aino (Sailor V / Sailor Venus) she has many adventures. Usagi soon finds her great love Mamoru Chiba (Tuxedo Mask). It turns out that Usagi is the reborn princess of the moon Princess Serenity and Mamoru is the reborn prince of the earth Prince Endymion.

Emergence

On July 6, 2012, a new Sailor Moon anime for Summer 2013 was announced at the Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Special Event in Tokyo. The date was only postponed to the 2013/2014 winter season and finally to July 2014. On September 28, 2015, the official Sailor Moon website announced that the third season, in which the third arc (Infinity Arc) will be adapted, is in production. In January 2016 it was announced on the series' official homepage that the third season would be released in spring 2016. Directed in the first two seasons was Munehisa Sakai and in the third season Chiaki Kon. The character design of the first two arcs came from Yukie Sakō. In the third season, the character design took over Akira Takahashi. The transformation scenes and parts of the opening animation were created in the first two seasons using CGI images.

At the end of June 2017 it was announced that the Manga's Dead Moon Arc would be adapted as a two-part film series under the title Sailor Moon Eternal . The two-part film project is produced by the Tōei Animation and Studio Deen studios, while Chiaki Kon takes over the direction again. The first of the two films was originally scheduled to hit Japanese theaters on September 11, 2020. However, the date for the first part has been postponed to January 8, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , and the publication of the second part is scheduled to follow on February 11, 2021.

DVD and Blu-ray releases

Japan

From October 15, 2014 to October 7, 2015 King Records released the Dark Kingdom Arc and the Black Moon Arc in a limited Blu-ray version with gimmicks on 13 volumes. An unlimited edition was released on DVD and Blu-ray from November 12, 2014 to November 11, 2015 . Each volume has two episodes. For these publications, the image material was revised again and production errors corrected.

German-speaking area

On December 6, 2015 it was announced that the German anime label Kazé Germany had secured the distribution rights to Sailor Moon Crystal. The series has been released on DVD and Blu-ray since April 29, 2016.

Boxes 1, 3 and 5 appeared in a limited collection slipcase with a placeholder for the next box. The two magnets of the first box, the magnet and the lip balm of the third box as well as the three magnets and the poster of the fifth are only included as gimmicks in the edition with a cardboard slipcase. Unlike the Japanese release, boxes with six to seven episodes per box were released in Germany.

In boxes 5 and 6, the information about the division of the episodes is incorrect. Act 33 (episode 34) is supposed to be on the first volume, but is included in the second, as act 27 is divided into two episodes. The boxes also contain several misspellings and errors in content.

synchronization

The German dubbed version was created by the dubbing studio Rescue Film GmbH on behalf of Toei Animation Europe . Pascal Breuer, Caroline Combrinck and Dominik Auer , who was only available for the first two seasons, were responsible for the German dialogue direction . The dialogue books were written by Uwe Thomsen, Sonja Tièschky and Beate Pfeiffer . The team was supported by Stavros Koliantzas (founder of the largest German-speaking fan community for Sailor Moon , SailorMoonGerman ), who worked as a raw translator and part of the editorial team.

While the synchronization of the first series in German still contained a lot of dialogue censorship, Sailor Moon Crystal did without this censorship. In addition, almost all names and metamorphoses were taken from the Japanese version. All speaking roles, with the exception of Usagi Tsukino, have been newly cast in the Japanese original version and in the German dubbing.
