Mil Milhas Brasileiras
The Mil Milhas Brasileiras , also Mil Milhas , 1000 mile race of Brazil or 1600 km race of Interlagos , was an endurance race for touring and sports cars that was held between 1956 and 2008.
history
Inspired by the Italian Mille Miglia , it was organized (among others) by Wilson Fittipaldi senior, father of Emerson Fittipaldi and Wilson Fittipaldi , and Eloy Gagliano on the Interlagos Circuit . From November 24 to 25, 1956, 31 sports cars competed at the premiere. Since then, it has been held annually in Brazil with brief interruptions. Except for 1997 and 1999, all races were held on the Interlagos circuit; from 1956 to 1989 the races took place on the old, 8 km long course. The route was then shortened to 4.3 km and modernized in order to once again serve as the annual venue for the Formula 1 championship from 1990 onwards .
In 1997 the race was held on the former Formula 1 circuit of Jacarepaguà near Rio de Janeiro . The 1999 edition of Mil Milhas Brasileiras, on the other hand, was held at the Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba .
In 2007 the race was part of the Le Mans Series and therefore part of an international championship for the first time. The record winner is Zeca Giaffone with 5 wins.
