Tong Li Publishing ( Chinese  東 立 出版社  /  东 立 出版社 , Pinyin Dōng Lì Chūbǎnshè , Tong Li 東 立  /  东 立 for short ) is a comic book publisher in Taiwan . The company sells domestic comics - Manhuas - as well as mangas from Japan and Korean Manhwa under license under the imprint of Tong Li Comics, or TLC for short . In addition to the publication of comics, the publisher also sells light novels, among other things . In Taiwan , the publisher is one of the largest licensee for manga. Tong Li has a subsidiary in Hong Kong called Tong Li Publishing Group Limited ( 東 立 出版 集團 有限公司  /  东 立 出版 集团 有限公司 ), or Tong Li Hong Kong ( 東 立 香港  /  东 立 香港 ) for short . The "Tong-Li tiger " - 東 立 虎  /  东 立 虎 - forms the company's well-known mascot and logo .

history

The company was founded in 1977 with nine employees. It initially only brought out illegal copies of Japanese comics. This has long been the practice in Taiwan because licensing was costly and strictly regulated by the government. Unlicensed publications, however, were tolerated by the government. The originals obtained from Japan were copied, translated, censored according to moral or state guidelines and then printed in large numbers. The publisher's output grew to 50 manga titles per month at the end of the 1980s; some of these titles have sold over 100,000 copies. 20 to 30 titles were also sold to other Southeast Asian countries each month, including Singapore and Malaysia . Publishing director and founder Fang Wan-nan ( 范萬楠  /  范万楠 , Fàn Wànnán ) called himself “King of the Pirates” because of his success with illegal copies.

In 1988, Tong Li and the other major Taiwanese publishers reached an agreement with Japanese publishers, according to which the unlicensed publications were not stopped, but there were flat payments to Japan and in return support for the publication of current titles. Tong Li subsequently secured 44% of the manga market in Taiwan. In 1992, the government introduced strict copyright laws that ended the pirate publishers' business practices in Taiwan. Like others, Tong Li converted his business and from then on obtained licenses from Japanese publishers. Previously, individual works had been published under license, such as Minako Naritas Cipher in 1989 from publisher Hakusensha and Katsuhiro Otomos Akira in 1991 from Kodansha . In the following years, the publisher brought out the first magazines with manga in Taiwan. Today Tong Li publishes over 100 manga titles a year. The most famous titles include mangas such as One Piece , Bleach , Gintama , Hunter x Hunter , Naruto , Shijō Saikyō no Deshi Ken'ichi , Skip Beat and others. v. a.

Manhua competition

The publisher has been organizing various Manhua competitions for young talents in the comics scene since the 1990s, in order to offer them an entry-level and public platform in the comic industry. Since 2017, for example, the "Tong Li Creative Competition" - 東 立 原創 大賽 - which had existed since 2013-2016, was discontinued in its former form due to major changes in the comic and manga industry (see Webcomic , Webtoon ) and will be changed to others in the future Manner continued.
