Harold Sakuishi

Harold Sakuishi ( Japanese ハ ロ ル ド 作 石 , Harorudo Sakuishi ; actually: 作 石 貴 浩 , Sakuishi Takahiro ; born March 16, 1969 in Aichi Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese manga artist .

biography

In 1987, Sakuishi won the Tetsuya Chiba Prize, a young comic book award given by the manga magazine Morning . This award enabled him to publish with Kōdansha , the publisher of Morning and several other manga magazines. His debut work as a professional manga artist appeared in Young Magazine in 1987 , for which he would continue to work in the following years.

From 1988 to 1993 he had his first success with the manga series Gorillaman . The about 4,300 pages long, humorous manga was implemented as an original video animation (OVA) and was awarded the Kōdansha Manga Prize in 1990 in the “ His or General” category. His interest in baseball processed in the sports comedy Stopper Busujima , which was published in about 2,500 pages in Young Magazine from 1996 to 1998 .

From 1999 to 2008 Sakuishi drew the manga series Beck on his longest and most successful work to date. The manga was published in over 6,000 pages in Gekkan Magazine , which is aimed at a slightly younger target group than his previous works. Beck is about the career of a Japanese independent rock band and the lives of the band members and contains numerous allusions to the international rock music scene. Sakuishi, himself a fan of rock music, won the Kōdansha Manga Prize for Beck in 2002 in the " Shōnen " category . The manga was implemented as an anime television series and is being translated into several languages. The 33 anthologies on Beck sold over twelve million times.

In 2003 the author created Under the Bridge, an autobiographical short comic story about a meeting with the American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers .
