Parasyte - Kiseijuu ( Japanese 寄生獣 Parasyte , German , parasites Beast ' ) is a science fiction - Manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki describing a parasite invasion of Earth. In 2014 the work was adapted as an anime and published as Parasyte - the maxim in the German-speaking countries in the original with German subtitles. A German-language release was announced at the end of August 2017 by the publisher Kazé Anime for the spring of 2018. The release finally began in May 2018.

action

Strange spores of unknown origin fly to Earth. These parasites invade humans and animals and take possession of the brains and nervous control systems . They can then reshape the bodies of their hosts as they wish.

The 17-year-old Shin'ichi Izumi ( 泉 新 一 ) is also threatened by such a parasite at night. But he notices the snake-like creature in time and when it enters his right arm, he cuts off his arm. The next morning he initially believes it was just a dream. But his right arm is behaving strangely and Shin'ichi realizes that the dream of that time was a reality after all. He calls his parasite, who can also talk and read and is very inquisitive, Migī ( ミ ギ ー , Eng .: right ). In order to survive, both are forced to coexist and hide the parasite from others. Like all other parasites, Migī can sense the presence of others of its kind within a radius of about 300 meters. The parasites that have successfully taken over another human feed by killing humans. The result is a gruesome series of murders that caused a great public stir. A special investigation team is set up and Shin'ichi worries that it might hit his parents or classmates. He is particularly concerned about Satomi Murano ( 村野 里 美 ), with whom he fell in love. But she and his parents also notice that Shin'ichi has changed, but does not want to talk to them about it.

Shin'ichi soon notices that his new teacher is a parasite, and she too becomes aware of Shin'ichi. She lives with another parasite and is very interested in people's lives and the place that their species has in this world. She becomes pregnant from the other parasite, but the child is probably a human one - parasites obviously cannot reproduce in this way. Since her partner sees Shin'ichi and his knowledge of both of them as a threat, he attacks the school and causes a bloodbath. Eventually he can be killed by Shin'ichi and he can save Satomi. The teacher disappears.

When Shin'ichi's parents go on vacation, he is initially happy that they are out of town. But on vacation they come across a parasite that eventually kills and takes over its mother. The parasite Shin'ichi attacks at home in the form of his mother, who is surprised, shocked and seriously wounded. He survives only through Migi's abilities, which merges the two even more strongly. While Migi has to sleep 4 hours a day from now on, Shin'ichi receives superhuman strength. Shin'ichi's father survives but can hardly believe what happened to them. When he travels to him, Shin'ichi cannot tell him that he too has a parasite, but encourages him in what he can remember. Shin'ichi also meets a person who, similar to himself, lives with a parasite. He doesn't know anyone else of his kind and tries to lead a normal life. Together they protect Shin'ichi's father, as the parasite attacks again in the form of Shin'ichi's mother. Despite Migi's absence in his sleep, they can kill the enemy parasite.

Back in Tokyo, Shin'ichi goes back to school and is again confronted with parasites. One is a new classmate who wants to make friends with him and integrate into society. But he continues to secretly kill people, especially classmates and finally almost a classmate who discovers his secret, so that Shin'ichi kills him. Another student who can sense parasites falls in love with Shin'ichi. He fears that he will drag her into the fighting and tries to get rid of her, but finally tells her about Migi. She doesn't believe him and is soon killed by another parasite. Shin'ichi desperate that he couldn't protect her.

Meanwhile, a group of parasites organized around Takeshi Hirokawa ( 広 川 剛 志 ), who ran for elections as a political group and, with Takeshi Hirokawa, ultimately appointed a mayor. Among them is the former teacher of Shin'ichi, who now calls herself Reiko Tamura ( 田村 玲子 ). She puts a private detective on him. He first discovers his secret and then that of his client. These eventually destroy his office and kill his family. When he wants revenge on Reiko Tamura and kidnaps her baby. There is an argument with Shin'ichi, who was called by Reiko Tamura, her and the detective and the police, with whom the detective is now working. Reiko Tamura is shot dead by the police, but protects her baby and entrusts it to Shin'ichi. Nor does this tell the police anything about them or themselves. Nevertheless, he is questioned further and compared to the serial killer Uragami ( 浦 上 ), who is said to be able to recognize parasites. But at first he doesn't recognize Migi.

The special police unit is carrying out a fight against the parasites in the town hall, where Takeshi Hirokawa and his group are sitting. Pretending to be an emergency, people are only let out in groups and screened - parasites are recognized and they are shot immediately. When Takeshi Hirokawa realizes this, his group goes back into the building with a trick. The special forces follow them and a fight breaks out with each of the parasites. Takeshi Hirokawa turns out to be the person who aided the parasites because they decimate the people who harm the earth so much. The last parasite Gotō ( 後 藤 ), which combines several parasites, is too powerful, however, can destroy the special units and flee. The serial killer Uragami escapes in chaos.

Now Shin'ichi is full of fear that Goto would attack and kill him. But Satomi can give him back the will to go on living - he wants to go on living with her and for her safety. But first he leaves Tokyo for the countryside. When they meet Goto again, Shin'ichi and Migi split up in order to defeat him. But this also fails and Migi is swallowed up by Gotō and becomes one of the parasites living in him. Shin'ichi flees and finds accommodation with an old woman. But when Gotō attacks people from the village, Shin'ichi takes the courage to oppose him. At first there is little he can do against him. But when Shin'ichi exposes Gotō to poison at a dump, the latter loses control of the parasites in him. Also about Migi, who is now returning to Shin'ichi. But Shin'ichi initially hesitates to seize the moment and kill Gotō. He wonders what right he has to condemn another species, when people kill others and poison the earth, like the poison in the dump did. But in order to protect his fellow human beings, Shin'ichi then decides to kill Gotō.

In the time after that, there were no more conspicuous murders and nothing more was heard from the parasites. Migi says goodbye to Shin'ichi in an endless sleep. Shin'ichi has a hard time saying goodbye, Migi has long since become a friend. Years later, when Shin'ichi has been with Satomi for a long time, both of them suddenly meet Uragami again. He threatens Satomi, tells about Shin'ichi's parasites, describes him as a monster and wants to talk to him about killing people. Shin'ichi fends off the fact that Uragami is the real monster and saves Satomi, who, despite Shin'ichi's secret, continues to love and trust him. To save Satomi from certain death, Migi also wakes up from his sleep for a moment, so that Shin'ichi is convinced that Migi is still alive.

The manga was published in German under the title Parasyte - Kiseijuu from July 2016 to June 2018 by Panini Verlag with all eight volumes.

reception

The series won the Kōdansha Manga Prize in 1993. In 1996, the award for Best Manga followed with the Seiun Prize , which is awarded for science fiction works. Jason Thompson thinks that the memorable plot shows in a realistic way how people react to the given, fantastic situation and thus follows the recipe of a classic science fiction novel. Hitoshi Iwaaki's drawings are not as good as his narrative style, but they fit the serious tone of the story. The violence is drastic, but not sadistic.
