Knights of Sidonia ( Jap. シドニアの騎士 , Shidonia no Kishi ) is a published from 2009 to 2015 science fiction - manga series by Tsutomu Nihei , the 2014 anime adaptation has learned. The work, which is about the life of mankind on a huge spaceship in the distant future, can be classified into the genres of science fiction, action and drama.

Tanikaze Nagate is a young man who lives with his grandfather and trains daily on a simulator for pilot-controlled combat robots called Guardians ( 衛 人 , Morito ). When the food runs out and Tanikaze goes out of the shared hiding place to steal rice, he is captured and learns that he is on the giant spaceship Sidonia, which set out from Earth over a thousand years ago to seek the Gauna ( 奇 居 子 ), alien invaders to escape. Tanikaze decides to become a Guardian pilot and defend Sidonia against the threat posed by the Gauna.
Sidonia is a spaceship about 28 km long and 7 km in diameter in the shape of an octagonal prism . In addition to relatively large areas for living, propulsion, and artificial gravity , it also contains a deep sea area that takes up a quarter of the space, the outer shell is covered by a thick layer of ice for defense purposes.

- Since his birth he lived with his grandfather, who trained him as a pilot, and only by chance came to the part of Sidonia inhabited by other people.
- He decides to become a pilot, what is special about him is that he cannot photosynthesize like the others and has to eat regularly, and that injuries in him heal extremely quickly.

- A pilot with whom Nagate falls in love, but who is killed during a mission and has since appeared as an enemy copied by the Gauna.

- Vice Commander of the Guardian Operations. Initially tries unsuccessfully to get Nagate's attention, later lives with him, Izana, and Tsumugi.
- Honoka series ( 仄 シ リ ー ズ , Honoka shirīzu )

- Eleven adult clones, each five years old, who also serve as Guardian pilots, and whose encounter with Nagate usually ends up being painful for Nagate, as he often opens the door in an unfavorable situation.
- Tsumugi Shiraui ( 白 羽衣 つ む ぎ , Shiraui Tsumugi )
- A chimera of man and gauna, created to fight the gauna as a living weapon. Makes friends with Nagate and Izana and visits them in the form of a tentacle , which forces its way through the pipe system of Sidonia, as their actual body is much too big to move in this area of the ship.

- One of the best pilots, initially an enemy and rival of Nagate. After his body is taken over by Ochiai, creates the Chimera Tsumugi.
- Teruru Ichigaya ( 市 ヶ 谷 テ ル ル , Ichigaya Teruru )
- A gynoid that was created to avoid the danger of the Gauna, as their "father" (their builder) believed that the Gauna were attracted to humans. In case of danger, their skin involuntarily becomes covered with a kind of armor. She initially disliked Nagate.

- Speaker: Sayaka Ōhara
- Captain of the Sidonia, never seen without her Nō mask, and who centuries ago played an important role in fighting the Gauna.
- Yure Shinatose ( 科 戸 瀬 ユ レ , Shinatose Yure )
- Izana's grandmother, she is a scientist and once made immortality possible for the Sidonia team members, who are most important for human survival, as well as developing photosynthesis for humans. She also transferred Ochiai's brain to his new body.

- She is the caretaker of the dormitory where Nagate and Izana initially live. The extraordinary thing about her is that she is a talking bear with a prosthetic arm.

- Formerly Sidonia's best pilot and Nagate's grandfather. Nagate is a clone of Hiroki. Tired of the eternal struggle, Hiroki settled down and aged without treatment, but was discovered and Kobayashi ordered his brain to be transferred to an immortal clone body. Hiroki resisted, stole the clone (Tanikaze Nagate) and escaped into the labyrinthine bowels of Sidonia.

- Speaker: Takehito Koyasu
- Brilliant scientist, and transhumanist who has technically improved himself again and again, and whose experiments on hybrids of Gauna and humans almost led to Sidonia's demise, and disgraced him. A clone with its brain and under the control of Kobayashi serves as the key to its "external brain," a vast collection of data. At the current plot period he is the main antagonist alongside the Gauna.

The manga by Tsutomu Nihei will appear in Japan from April 25, 2009 (issue 6/2009) in Kōdansha's manga magazine Afternoon . The last chapter was published on September 25, 2015. The individual chapters have been summarized in a total of 15 edited volumes .
In Germany he has been published as Knights of Sidonia by Egmont Manga since December 6, 2010 ; 15 volumes have appeared so far. Since February 5, 2013, it has also been published by Vertical in the USA .
Anime
The animation studio Polygon Pictures , which specializes in CGI series, adapted the manga as an anime television series. Directed by Kōbun Shizuno , assisted by Hiroyuki Seshita, based on the script by Sadayuki Murai . For the character design was Yuki Moriyama responsible and artistic director was Mitsunori Kataama.
The first broadcast of the first season with 12 episodes took place from April 11 to June 27, 2014 after midnight (and thus on the previous TV day ) on MBS , and on the following day on TBS and CBC , and later on BS-TBS and AT- X .
The anime was already licensed by Netflix in December 2013 for its streaming areas, which stream the episodes with English subtitles shortly after the Japanese broadcast. In Australia and New Zealand the licensing was done by Madman Entertainment. When the German Netflix launch in September 2014, Knights of Sidonia was also taken over with German subtitles. As of July 2, 2019, the series was no longer included in Netflix's portfolio. However, as of December 2019, it will be back on Netflix
The first two episodes of the second season Sidonia no Kishi: Daikyū Wakusei Sen'eki ( シ ド ニ ア の 騎士 第九 惑星 戦 役 ) were shown in a pre-premiere on November 23, 2014 at a special event. The regular broadcast of the likewise 12 episodes took place from April 11 to June 27, 2015 after midnight on TBS and later on MBS, CBC, BS-TBS and AT-X.

In Japan the volumes sold over 20,000 copies each. The American Young Adult Library Services Association named the manga in 2014 as one of ten comics that are particularly recommended for young people. According to AnimaniA , the series is an “intelligent space drama in which [the protagonist] Nagate has to prove himself in a strange world.” The work is not as gloomy as the Biomega and Blame previously created by Nihei ! , the use of grid foil instead of hatching gives “the setting a lighter, smoother look” . Nihei remains true to the detailed representation of the technology and the sweeping scenery.
