Fumi Yoshinaga ( Japanese よ し な が ふ み , Yoshinaga Fumi ; born October 20, 1971 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese manga artist .

Career

From the late 1980s she published Boys Love manga on the amateur draftsman market ( Dōjinshi ). Her debut as a commercial illustrator came in 1994 with Tsuki to Sandal in the boys love magazine Hanaoto .

She had her commercial breakthrough in 1999 with Seiyō Kottō Yōgashiten , a series about four men who jointly run a small pastry shop. The manga was implemented as a live-action television series in 2001 and again as an anime series in 2008. The four volumes of the manga series sold over 1.7 million times by 2009.

She has had the greatest success of her career so far with the manga series Ōoku, which has been running in Shōjo magazine Melody since 2004 . Ōoku is an alternative world story at the time of the Tokugawa shogunate and is about a male harem in the now matriarchal shogunate palace . The manga has received multiple awards in and outside of Japan, and by 2017 the first 15 volumes had sold more than five million copies. In addition to numerous manga awards, in 2009 she received the American James Tiptree, Jr. Award for her series Ōoku , which is given to science fiction and fantasy literature that question and examine gender roles in an outstanding way . She was the first comic book artist to receive the award. The Japanese counterpart to this award, the Sense of Gender Award , she had already received in 2005 for the same series.

With the manga Kinō Nani Tabeta? For the first time since 2007, she has published a magazine about a gay couple in Tokyo and their food preferences in Morning , which is not primarily aimed at female readers.

Her works are translated into numerous languages, including English, French, Korean and Italian.

subjects

As one of only a few commercial manga artists and public figures in the Japanese entertainment industry at all, she appears openly feminist in her work and on other occasions . She is considered to be particularly sensitive to gender issues in her work. In her works she deals, for example, with female managers, conflicts between job and reproductive work , sexual abuse or discrimination against women in the workplace. With Ōoku she creates a feminist reinterpretation of a historical setting.

An important motif of her work is food, which is why some of her series such as Seiyō Kottō Yōgashiten or Kinō Nani Tabeta? be assigned to the manga genre Gourmet .
