Cooking Papa ( Japanese ク ッ キ ン グ パ パ , also Kukkingu Papa ) is a manga series by Tochi Ueyama that has been published in Japan since 1985. It was adapted as an anime television series and has over 25,000 pages. The stories revolve around a cooking family man and can be assigned to the gourmet genre .

Family father Kazumi Araiwa, whose wife Nijiko cannot cook, he cooks for himself, his wife and son Makoto in her place. He quickly finds pleasure in it, but at work the head of department absolutely wants to avoid his colleagues learning about his cooking skills. His boss, who likes to swap his food with Araiwa's lunch box, always praises his wife. And in order to be able to cook at home in good time and to take care of the son who is going to elementary school, Araiwa always has to go home on time. If his wife returns late from her job as a local journalist, he goes back to work for a short late shift.

The preparation of the dishes is shown in detail and with photographically exact images, and the series also contains recipes to cook at home.

The series has been published by Kodansha in Morning magazine since 1995 . The chapters are also published together in 150 volumes. A Chinese translation is published by Sharp Point Press .

Anime adaptation

An anime adaptation of the manga for Japanese television was created at Studios Eiken and Sunshine Corporation, directed by Toshitaka Tsunoda . The script was written by Hiroyuki Hoshiyama and Shun'ichi Yukimuro , Hirohide Shikishima was responsible for character design and Katsuyoshi Kanemura was the artistic director . The composer of the soundtrack was Toshihiko Sahashi . The total of 151 were broadcast from April 9, 1992 to May 25, 1995 by TV Asahi in Japan.

The volumes each sell around 40,000 times in the first few weeks after their first publication. In 2015, on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, the series was awarded a special prize at the Kōdansha Manga Prize, which is intended to recognize the long-lasting popularity of the manga.

The stories of Cooking Papa are described by critics as "carefree" and "sympathetically drawn". Cooking Papa tells "very everyday, but heartwarming stories of a working, cooking family father who makes the family happy with his home-style cooking", according to the German magazine Animania .
