Shōjo Friend
Shōjo Friend ( Japanese 少女 フ レ ン ド , shōjo fureindo ) was a manga magazine that appeared from 1962 to 1996 in over 900 issues in the Kōdansha publishing house. It was aimed primarily at teenage girls and published Shōjo manga.
The first edition was published in December 1962. The magazine appeared as Shūkan Shōjo Friend ( 週刊 少女 フ レ ン ド ) from then on weekly. Together with Margaret, who was founded a few months later, it was the first weekly manga magazine for a female readership, while monthly Shōjo magazines with Nakayoshi and Shōjo Club had already been published by Kōdansha for several years. 1968 followed with Shōjo Comic at Shōgakukan , another weekly magazine, with which the magazine had another competitor alongside Margaret . In 1965, the monthly sister magazine Bessatsu became Friend founded.
In the 1960s, Tetsuya Chiba , Kazuo Umezu , Machiko Satonaka , Akira Mochizuki and Chieko Hosokawa worked for the magazine , among others . In the 1970s, Waki Yamato had Haikara-san ga Tōru and Yōko Shōji with Seito Shokun! great success. Nevertheless, the number of editions fell, which is why the magazine was switched to a slower publication cycle in 1974; it was now brought out twice a month. From 1991 it was published monthly.
The last time the magazine was published was the October 1996 issue. After the hiring process, the magazine's illustrators switched to the newly founded Dessert .
