The Bear Catcher ( Japanese イ タ ズ 熊 Itazu - Kuma ) is a Japanese feature film from 1987 . The youth film was directed by Toshio Gotoh , the script was written by Ryunosuke Ono based on Gotoh's idea. The main roles were played by Takahiro Tamura and Hiroshi Miyata . Kobushi Productions produced the 117-minute adventure film about the relationship between a boy and his grandfather.

1928 in the snowy mountains of Akita Prefecture . A bounty is placed on a wild bear destroying the farmers' fields. The impoverished, stubborn Ginzo Iwata is a group hunting Matagi hunter with years of experience. All of the friends he hunted with now have other jobs. He plans to shoot the bear and collect the bounty. He manages to kill the bear, but discovers that the animal was the mother of a bear cub. He feels sorry for the little bear and regrets what he did.
He and his grandson Ippei raise the boy. Ippei, whose father died in the war in Siberia, is also said to be Matagi one day.
reception
The film, in which Tōei acted as a distribution company, opened on September 5, 1987 in Japanese cinemas. From 1992 it ran several times on German television.
In May 1987 the Japanese publisher Chūkōronsha published a 288-page novel by Ryunosuke Ono with the story of the film.
The New York Times described the film as a “decent fable about remorse” ( The Japanese Forest of Little Bear is a neat crisis-of-conscience fable. ) It is ideal for Saturday afternoons.
Awards
The bear catcher was nominated for Best Supporting Actress ( Junko Sakurada ), Best Music , Best Editing and Best Sound at the Japanese Academy Awards in 1988 , but had to admit defeat to other films in all four categories.
Junko Sakurada, who could not prevail at the Japanese Academy Awards against Rino Katase , won the Hochi Film Prize and the Kinema Jumpo Prize for Best Supporting Actress in 1987 for her portrayal of the mother Kimi .
