Japanese Academy Award / Best Actor
Since it was first awarded in 1978, the Japanese Academy Awards have honored the best actor in a leading role in the Best Leading Actor category ( Japanese 最 優秀 主演 男 優 賞 , saiyūshū shuen dan'yū shō ). With the exception of 1981 and 2004, four other actors were nominated in addition to the winner.

Ogata won three times, Yakusho twice. The most nominated actor without distinction in this category is Kiyoshi Atsumi . Atsumi was nominated six times between 1978 and 1987, mainly due to the Otoko wa tsurai yo series.
