Tsutomu Yamazaki

Tsutomu Yamazaki ( Japanese山 﨑 努, Yamazaki Tsutomu ; born December 2, 1936 in Matsudo , Chiba Prefecture ) is a Japanese actor .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1956, Yamazaki began an acting training with the theater company "Haiyū-za". He made his acting debut in 1960 under the direction of Kihachi Okamoto in the film Daigaku no sanzōkutachi , before taking part in many other theater and film productions. Akira Kurosawa first cast him in 1963 in Tengoku to Jigoku , where he played a nihilistic kidnapper. From then on he often appeared in criminal roles; In 1977 he played a gunman in Yoshitarō Nomuras Yatsuhaka-mura . In the mid-1980s, he gained widespread popularity in Jūzō Itami's films Osōshiki (1984), Tampopo (1985) and Marusa no Onna (1987).

Awards

Yamazaki has been nominated eight times for the Japanese Academy Award , which he won four times. He was also awarded the Kinema Jumpō Prize three times. For the film Osōshiki , in which he also directed for the first time, he received many Japanese film awards, including the Japanese Academy Award for Best Actor and the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Director.
