action

Five years after the enemy Gamilas contaminated the earth with their bombs, the survivors live in underground dwellings in 2199. After their last fleet of starships has been defeated, they wait helplessly for their extinction, which is expected in a few months. One day the former pilot Susumu Kodai ( Takuya Kimura ) discovers a message capsule from the planet Iskandar, which absorbs the surrounding radioactivity and contains the blueprint for a warp drive and Iskandar's coordinates. The United Nations Space Administration then builds the Yamato battleship from the wreckage of the Yamato. Mankind's last hope is to send the Yamato to Iskandar and get help from there. A crew of volunteers, which Susumu joins, fights their way to Iskandar in the large magellanic cloud with the help of their novel primary weapon, the "wave movement cannon" (波動 砲 hadō hō) . First, Susumu experiences rivalry from the self-confident fighter pilot Yuki Mori ( Meisa Kuroki ). Appointed acting in command due to an illness of the captain, he has to make difficult but ultimately successful decisions that bring him and Yuki closer together. After arriving at the coordinates provided by the aliens, it turns out that the Iskandar and Gamila actually inhabit the same planet; they are different aspects of the same swarm consciousness . While countless Gamila drones fight and decimate the expedition, Iskandar equips Yuki with the ability to eliminate radioactivity and make the earth habitable again. The retreat is also marked by heavy fighting and victims of the expedition crew. However, the Gamila / Iskandar managed to blow up their energy source. The Yamato returns to Earth, where the last surviving Gamila are about to destroy the planet in revenge. After evacuating Yuki and the rest of the crew, Susumu destroys the attackers with a final kamikaze deployment of his battleship.
