Rikyu, the Tea Master ( Japanese 利 休Rikyū ) is a Japanese feature film directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara from 1989 . It is the film adaptation of a novel by Yaeko Nogami and deals with the life of the tea master Sen no Rikyū (1522–1591).

action

The film focuses on Sen no Rikyū's last years during the turbulent Sengoku period in the 16th century . It begins near the end of Oda Nobunaga's reign, when Rikyū is employed as a tea master at Nobunaga, and continues in the Momoyama period . Rikyū is depicted as a person who is committed to aesthetics and perfection, especially in connection with the tea ceremony.

During his employment with Toyotomi Hideyoshi , Rikyū is in a privileged position with constant access to the powerful feudal lord and the theoretical possibility of influencing his politics, which Rikyū does not make use of. Instead, all his attention is on tea. When society around him changes radically by force, Rikyū has no choice but to express his views on political issues. He expresses his opinion on Hideyoshi's military plans to conquer China, which has tragic consequences for him.

Reviews

The lexicon of international film wrote: “Magnificently equipped, confidently staged and impressively played historical film, which differentiates the problematic relationship between art and power, not only in the 16th century.” The New York Times said: “The film is well thought out. Nothing about him seems to be spontaneous, but neither is he gloomy. "
