The film is based on two historical events that have strengthened the friendship between Japan and Turkey: the sinking of the Turkish frigate Ertuğrul off the Japanese coast in 1890 and the evacuation of Japanese nationals from Iran in 1985. The drama won the Japan Academy Film Award in Awards for ten categories, including Best Artistic Direction, Best Sound Recording, Outstanding Film and Outstanding Director. It is a co-production between Creators' Union and Toei Company from Japan and Böcek Yapım from Turkey.

action

Ertuğrulepisode

It is the year 1890. On the night of September 16, the Turkish frigate Ertuğrul , which is on its way from Yokohama to Istanbul , gets caught in a typhoon and sinks off the coast of Kashinos , a poor fishing village on the Pacific coast of the Kushimoto municipality in Wakayama Prefecture . With more than 500 deaths, it was the largest marine disaster in history to date. At the risk of their lives the people of Kashinos manage to save 69 Turkish seamen. Motosada Tamura ( Seiyo Uchino ), originally a samurai who settled in Kashino as a doctor, and his assistant Haru ( Shioli Kutsuna ) treat the injured. In doing so, Haru develops a special relationship with the Turkish officer Mustafa ( Kenan Ece ), whose life she saved. Although she is so poor that she has little to eat, the villagers share what little they have with strangers from a country over 9,000 km away. For their further treatment, the Turkish seamen are transferred to a hospital in Kobe on a ship belonging to the German Imperial Navy .

Tehran episode

The year is 1985. The Iran-Iraq war is underway. Harumi ( Shioli Kutsuna ), a teacher at a Japanese school, and the Turkish embassy employee Murat ( Kenan Ece ) get to know each other during a bomb alarm in Tehran . The Iraqi government announces a major attack on Iran. After a period of 48 hours, all aircraft over Iranian airspace, including civil aircraft, are said to be shot down without exception. All countries begin evacuating their nationals. Only Japan does not send any help. More than 300 Japanese nationals are stuck in Tehran. As hopeless as the situation seems, Harumi looks for a way to save the children in her school. In gratitude for the rescue of the Ertuğrul crew in 1890, the Turkish Prime Minister Turgut Özal ( Deniz Oral ) decides to have the remaining Japanese citizens flown out of Iran. On the morning of March 19, a Turkish Airlines plane starts its flight to Tehran. On the one hand, however, there are only a few hours left until the Iraqi ultimatum expires, and Tehran is already under heavy rocket fire. On the other hand, there are still Turkish nationals at Tehran-Mehrabad Airport. They have yet to be convinced that they cannot board the rescue flight of their own country. This raises Murat before his countrymen and appeals to their conscience. He reminds them of the compassion and kindness of the Japanese villagers who long ago saved Turks in need.

After more than ten years of work, the film was completed in 2015.
