Tatsuo Matsumura

Tatsuo Matsumura ( Japanese 松 村 達 雄 , Matsumura Tatsuo ; born December 18, 1914 in Yokohama , † June 18, 2005 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese actor .

Life

The renowned Japanese actor Tatsuo Matsumura found his way to film relatively late. He remained loyal to the medium well into old age and participated in over 50 productions. He also played in historical and adventure films such as 47 Ronin and Samurai Rebellion (alongside Toshirō Mifune ), dramas such as Ame agaru - the wall of rain gives way, and science fiction films such as Ishirō Honda's return of King Kong . He starred twice under the respected director Akira Kurosawa : 1970 in Dodeskaden and 1993 in Kurosawa's last work, Madadayo . In it he played the Japanese university professor and writer Hyakken Uchida (1889–1971), who invited his former students every year and was ritually asked by them whether it was time for him, which he always made madadayo ( no, not yet ) replied. This role in an epic work full of socio-historical tones earned Matsumura a nomination for the Japanese Academy Award for Best Actor . In 1995, at the age of eighty, he played the Japanese premier Kantaro Suzuki (1867–1948) in the Canadian-Japanese co-production Hiroshima .

Matsumura became particularly popular in his homeland through the comedy series Tora-San . Between 1969 and 1995 the Shochiku studios produced a total of 48 films in this series around Torajiro Kuruma , called Tora-San , a tramp in distress reminiscent of Chaplin , played by the Japanese comedian Kiyoshi Atsumi . In a total of eight films between 1972 and 1987, Matsumura played Oi-chan , the uncle Tora-Sans.

Tatsuo Matsumura died of heart failure in Tokyo on June 18, 2005.
