Tokyo Kazoku ( Japanese 東京 家族 , Tōkyō Kazoku , English Tokyo Family ) is a Japanese drama from 2013 . It comes from the director Yōji Yamada and is a remake of Ozu's Journey to Tokyo . The film premiered on January 19, 2013 in Japan and was shown at the Berlinale 2013 in February 2013 .

The elderly couple Shukichi and Tomiko Hirayama are traveling from the provinces to the capital Tokyo to visit their children and grandchildren. But neither her eldest son Koichi, a successful doctor, nor daughter Shigekoko or her youngest son really have time for them.

The film is set in Tokyo and Ōsakikamijima, Hiroshima.

reception

The film grossed 1.56 trillion yen (13.4 million euros) worldwide. On Rotten Tomatoes , Tokyo Family achieved an audience score of 91 percent.

Maggie Lee is disappointed in the industry journal Variety : "Destined to annoy Ozu followers and bore the mainstream audience, Tokyo Family offers a colorless and hard-to-digest homage to Tokyo Story ."
