Yōji Yamada ( Japanese 山田 洋 次 Yamada Yōji ; born September 13, 1931 in Osaka , Honshū ) is a Japanese film director and screenwriter . He is responsible for over 80 film and television productions.

biography

Yamada studied law in Tokyo until 1954 , before turning to film via detours. He began as a screenwriter and assistant director at the renowned Japanese film company Shōchiku ; In 1961 he started directing a film. From 1969 to 1996 he made the 48 films in the Japanese comedy series " Otoko wa tsurai yo " ("It is not easy to be a man") with the main character Kuruma Torajirō, called "Tora-san", which are now among the most successful feature film series in Japanese film history. Yamada directed 46 of the productions and only wrote the script for episodes three and four.

Samurai trilogy

Outside of Japan, Yamada was best known for his "Samurai Trilogy", which illuminates the situation of the samurai at the time of the Bakumatsu and which places little emphasis on battle scenes. Nevertheless, they belong to the genre of Jidai-geki . The trilogy consists of the films:

Awards

In addition to numerous national and international prizes, his films received four invitations to the competition for the Golden Bear . In 2004, his film Samurai in the Twilight was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film . At the 60th Berlin Film Festival in 2010 , Yamada received the Berlinale Camera . In 2004 he was honored as a person with special cultural merits , in 2012 he was awarded the Order of Culture .

In April 2007 he received a visiting professorship at Ritsumeikan University .
