Institute for Science and Ethics

The Institute for Science and Ethics ( IWE ) is an institution of the Rheinische Friedrichs-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . It deals with ethical issues in medicine , science and technology in order to “promote a responsible handling of the new possibilities for action emerging in these areas”, according to its own statements. It carries out research projects and reports, promotes young scientists and the interdisciplinary discourse with various events and courses. There are also publications, including the Science and Ethics Yearbook .

The IWE was founded in 1993 on the initiative of the University of Bonn, the University of Essen , the Jülich Research Center (FZJ) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It was originally carried by the registered association with the same name and based in Bonn. The IWE has been a central scientific institution of the University of Bonn since 2010, which the association continues to support. Head of the institute is Dieter Sturma as its director .
