action

Ryota Nonomiya is a successful businessman who gets so fixated on his job that he neglects his wife Midori and son Keita. The family is wealthy and enjoys all privileges. One day when Ryota comes home, Midori tells him that the hospital where Keita was born is urgently requesting a meeting. There they learn that Keita was swapped when he was born, which is confirmed by a DNA test.

They meet with the other couple, Yukari and Yudai Saiki, simple people who run a small business in a suburb and otherwise live materially simply. They exchange photos so that Ryota and Midori see their biological son, Ryusei, for the first time. After a few meetings and an exchange of experiments, they decide to keep their birth sons with them permanently. However, the parents struggle internally with the loss, and the two boys are completely emotionalized, so that Ryusei ultimately runs away into his old home.

After Ryusei is back with Ryota and Midori, they begin to grow closer together. However, when Ryota views pictures on his camera, he finds some photos that Keita took of him while he was sleeping. He collapses crying and realizes that he hasn't given Keita enough time. He goes to see Keita, but Keita runs away from him. Ryota apologizes for his omissions and returns to the Saiki family with Keita.

criticism

The film received mostly positive reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , 87% of reviews are positive, out of a total of 90 reviews; the average rating is 7.6 / 10. The critical consensus states: "With a sensitive script, skillful direction and powerful acting, Like Father, Like Son uses elements that seem familiar to tell a thought-provoking story." At Metacritic , the film receives a rating of 73/100, based on 33 Reviews. Andrew Chan, writer of the Film Critics Circle of Australia, writes, “Basically, Like Father, Like Son is one of those rare and engaging films that are thoroughly deep, utterly moving, and extremely refreshing. Measured against the standard for perfect cinema, this film comes pretty close. "

On The American Spectator website, Eve Tushnet says the film brings together “some of Koreeda's distinctive trademarks: the extraordinary acting of children; the symmetrical framing and the musical narrative style ”as well as“ the change between normal recordings, in which the people would be tiny, and recordings from a child's perspective, in which the people would appear huge ”. The film service describes the film as “a demanding, gripping drama about parenthood and family ties that, despite its harrowing premise, avoids dramatic exacerbations” and advances the plot “both powerfully and gently”. The “different characters and contrasting life plans of the families” would again and again ensure “quiet humor”.

Remake

After the film caught Steven Spielberg's attention in Cannes , DreamWorks secured the rights to a remake. The directors are Chris and Paul Weitz .
