History of origin

La verité is the first feature film directed by Hirokazu Koreeda outside of Japan. It is also the first collaboration between the two French film actresses Juliette Binoche and Catherine Deneuve . Binoche said in an interview in 2016 that Koreeda was inspired by Olivier Assayas ' film Die Wolken von Sils Maria (2014) to make her own film with Deneuve, Ethan Hawke and her. In Die Wolken von Sils Maria she had taken on the lead role of a celebrated actress who is to take part in the new production of a play that made her famous 20 years ago.

The film was shot in Paris in autumn 2018 within 10 weeks. According to Koreeda, La Vérité reports - living and letting lie despite the glamorous cast of "a small family story that mostly takes place in a house". "I tried to let my characters live in this little universe, with their lies, their pride, their regrets, their sadness, joy and reconciliation," says the Japanese director and screenwriter. Since Koreeda spoke neither English nor French, his long-time translator Léa Le Dimna supported him from the beginning of the film project through to post-production . Since Koreeda tends to constantly rewrite his texts during filming, she not only translated the various script versions into French, but also translated the text changes from day to day. Due to the cultural gap between Japan and France, there were numerous changes to the original script, which were decided in consultation with the concerned French film team. For example, Le Dimna reported a scene in which the 7-year-old child sleeps in bed with his parents. But this was unusual for French viewing habits and has therefore been changed.

La Vérité - Live and Let Lie was originally intended to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2019 . Koreeda, who had been awarded the Golden Palm for Shoplifters - Family Ties the year before , hadn't been able to finish the film on time, according to the festival organizers.

Reviews

On the Rotten Tomatoes website , 88 percent of the 145 critics liked the film. Around 65 percent of the audience liked the film.

At the end of 2018, La Vérité - Live and Let Lies - was counted among the 20 most anticipated films of the 2019 cinema year by critics of the industry service IndieWire .

At the opening of the Venice Film Festival, Andreas Borcholte ( Spiegel Online ) saw a “leisurely and pleasantly staged opening film” with Koreeda's directorial work: the Japanese filmmaker appropriated “the rhythmic and mannerisms of French auteur films ” “ with a sure sense of style” . The critic, however, slightly regretted that “not much of his handwriting would remain recognizable”. Like Koreeda's earlier films, La verité has the deep, sensitive "intrusion into complicated family constellations" as its theme. Borcholte praised leading actress Catherine Deneuve in the role of Fabienne, in which "screen character and real person would merge". "Sometimes it's like watching the real Deneuve mirror her art and life's dramas," said the critic.

Tim Caspar Boehme ( the daily newspaper ) also saw the family as “a big topic” in the film, even if it was “not the main thing”. He praised the acting team around Deneuve, who were “quite outstanding in their role of the quick-witted 'witch'”, and Clémentine Grenier as her disarmingly smart granddaughter. Koreeda shows respect for the actors' leadership, which, according to Boehme, "leads a little too often to moments of conciliatory solidity". Nevertheless, the director said the scenes with childish protagonists were “terrific” again. Boehme also praised the script, which "neatly nests the complicated relationship between the main character and her roles in the film and her other roles in life".

Dietmar Dath ( Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ) joined in the praise for Deneuve and also praised the performances of Juliette Binoche and Ethan Hawke received from Koreeda. La verité is "composed lightly" and a "wonderful" opening film.

Gross profit

The film grossed around 5.2 million US dollars worldwide.

Awards

Hirokazu Koreeda competed with his film for the third time after 1995 and 2017 for the Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival. La Vérité - Live and Let Lie , however , did not receive an award.

In 2020, this was followed by an award at the Online Film Critics Society Awards in the category Best Non-American Theatrical Release (Best Non-US Release) .
