Shigeru Umebayashi

Shigeru Umebayashi ( Japanese 梅林 茂 , Umebayashi Shigeru ; born February 19, 1951 in Kitakyūshū , Fukuoka Prefecture ) is a Japanese film composer . He has composed music for over 40 films from Japan and China and in particular created some soundtracks for films by director Wong Kar-Wai .

Life

Umebayashi began working as a film composer in 1985. He was previously the front man of the Japanese new wave rock band EX .

Outside of Asia Umebayashi is best known for his collaboration with Wong Kar-Wai on the films In the Mood for Love (2001) and the sequel 2046 (2004). The song Lovers for the film House of Flying Daggers was sung by the soprano Kathleen Battle .
