Michael Galasso
Michael John Galasso (born April 5, 1949 in Hammond , Louisiana , † September 9, 2009 in Paris , France ) was an American composer .
biography
Michael John Galasso was the son of Dr. Michael A. Galasso and by Michaela Galasso Williams. While his father was violinist and concertmaster of the Baton Rouge Symphony , his mother played oboe with the same orchestra. His father later became a music professor at Louisiana State University and his mother was the director of the Montessori Children's House Baton Rouge. Michael Galasso learned the violin at the age of three and played his first solo concert with the New Orleans Philharmonic at the age of 11 . He later studied music at Oberlin College and Dartmouth College .
From the 1970s, Galasso composed the music for more than a dozen theater productions by the American theater director and artist Robert Wilson . These included music for performances by A Letter for Queen Victoria and Les Fables de La Fontaine . Galasso made his debut as a film composer in 1981 for the Swiss film Seuls . From the turn of the millennium he regularly composed for international productions such as In the Mood for Love , Waiting for the Clouds and things that hang from trees . For his music for the film biography Séraphine , Galasso received a nomination for best film music at the César 2009 French film award.
On September 9, 2009, Galasso died in his Paris home of complications from his hepatitis C disease. He left behind his wife and daughter, the choreographer and dancer Catherine Galasso.
