Chieko Baishō ( Japanese 倍 賞 千 恵 子 Baishō Chieko ; born June 29, 1941 in Kita , Tokyo ) is a Japanese actress , singer and voice actress . She gained fame through her appearances in the Otoko wa Tsurai yo films and her dubbing role of Sophie in Howl's Moving Castle .

Life

Chieko Baishō made her film debut in 1961 at the age of 20 in Kumo ga chigireru toki . Four years later she gained national fame through her role as Torajirō Kuruma in Yōji Yamada's film series Otoko wa Tsurai yo on the side of Kiyoshi Atsumi . Chieko Baishō was seen in all 49 films in the series until 1997. In 2019, after 22 years with Okaeri Tora-san, a 50th film in the series was released, in which she returned to this role.

In 1980, Chieko Baishō was awarded a Hochi Film Award for her role as Tamiko Kazami in the drama A Distant Scream in Spring , followed by the Prize of the Mainichi Eiga Concours in 1981. Her later roles included that of Mrs. Katagiri in The Hidden Blade from 2004. She is still active as an actress and has received several awards for her achievements in the film industry.

In addition to her acting career, Chieko Baishō is also active as a singer and dubbing actress. In 2004 she played the roles of young and old Sophie in Hayao Miyazaki's Moving Castle and also took part as a singer on the film's soundtrack. In the 2019 animated film Weathering With You , Chieko Baishō can be heard in the role of Tomi Tachibana .

Chieko Baishō is married to the composer Reijiro Koroku. Her sister Mitsuko Baishō , who is five years her junior, is also an actress.
