Otoko wa Tsurai yo ( Japanese 男 は つ ら い よ ; "Hard bread to be a man") is a series of films by director Yōji Yamada .

With 49 sequels in the period from 1969 to 1997, the series was long considered the longest film series in the Guinness Book of Records .

All films are structured according to a uniform pattern.

The main character is Torajiro Kuruma (abbreviated as Tora-san), played by Kiyoshi Atsumi .

Tora-san makes his living selling various trinkets at street markets. His open-minded and happy character helps him with this.

In this job he gets around all of Japan. Every time he falls in love with a woman in a city he is visiting. Then he comes back to his family; the main actress of the respective film reappears there a little later.

He is regularly clumsy in his relationship with the leading actress and in the end remains a likeable loser. Hard bread for him.

The main actor Kiyoshi Atsumi has been nominated six times for a Japanese Academy Award for his role as Tora-san , but never with success. The series is one of the most successful film series in Japan.
