ef - a fairy tale of the two. is an eroge - Ren'ai-Adventure (own name: Interactive Novel) in two parts by the company Minori from the years 2006 and 2008. Before the completion of the game, however, a manga and a short story collection were published, later a film adaptation as anime followed - Series, as well as two light novels .
Game mechanics and content
The game consists of two parts, each divided into three chapters. The first part, ef - the first tale. , focuses on Yūko Amamiya (prologue), Hiro Hirono and Miyako Miyamura (Chapter 1), and Kyōsuke Tsutsumi and Kei Shindō (Chapter 2). In ef - the latter tale. , the second part, is about the characters Renji Asō and Chihiro Shindō (Chapter 3), Shūichi Kuze and Mizuki Hayama (Chapter 4), as well as an insert in Chapter 4 Yū Himura and Yūko Amamiya (final chapter). The first chapter offers an introduction to the scenario in the city of Otowa and the characters. The following five chapters each contain the story of a couple.
Each of the five main chapters is told from the perspective of one (e.g. Chapter 1) or several characters (e.g. Chapter 4) and deals with the development of the relationship between one of the girls and one of the male characters. The chapters are named after each girl. The gameplay consists mainly of animations and conversations. A few times the player has to make decisions that advance the plot or lead to a worse ending. If decisions have been made correctly, the chapter ends with the representation of sexual intercourse between the protagonists . Sometimes there are H-scenes ( hentai scenes, i.e. sexual intercourse) even before this end .
After completing the respective part, extras ( memories ) are activated, which contain over 100 individual images from the game (often with all facial animations) and events (the complete H-scenes) as well as the music (28 tracks in ef - the first tale; 14 tracks in ef - the latter tale) included.
Development and publication
In 2004, Minori began developing the game under the direction of Nobukazu "nbkz" Sakai.
The plot was developed by the scenarist Mikage ( 御 影 ), who was previously partially involved in games by the developer Circus such as Suika and DC - Da Capo , in collaboration with the freelance, but closely collaborating with Minori, scenarist Yū Kagami ( 鏡 遊 ) .
However, history first became history in February 2005 in the manga magazine Dengeki Comic Gao! published by Media Works (today: ASCII Media Works ), with the drawings by Yū Kagami. After the magazine was discontinued in February 2008, the series switched to Dengeki Daioh magazine at the same publisher, where it has been summarized in nine edited volumes so far (July 2010).
In June 2006, the short story collection ef - a fairy tale of the two another tale was launched in Kadokawa Shoten's Comptiq magazine , which was published until June 2008. The text comes from Mikage and Yū Kagami, the illustrations were contributed by Naru Nanao ( 七 尾 奈 留 ), 2C Galore ( 2C = が ろ あ ) and Shōna Mitsuishi .
On December 22nd, 2006 the first part called ef - the first tale was finally released . of the computer game for the PC. The second part ef - the latter tale. followed on May 30, 2008. Directed by Mikage, who also contributed the scenario with Yū Kagami. Naru Nanao was responsible for the character design of the female characters and 2C Galore for the male characters. The music was composed by Tenmon , in the second part in collaboration with Eiichirō Yanagi. Makoto Shinkai animated the opening credits of both games in collaboration with the Ajia-dō studio and Shin Ōnuma was the director for the credits of the second part.
On September 26, 2010 it was announced that MangaGamer would publish an English-language localization based on the fan translation of the Canadian group No Name Losers (NNL). This was preceded by a warning from minori due to copyright infringement to NNL to discontinue its fan translations to ef and other titles, with minori offering a repeated warning in July 2010 that NNL could acquire a license and both parties entered into negotiations. The release is planned for July 27, 2012.
Adaptations
Anime
In 2007, Studio Shaft directed Shin Ōnuma, who was responsible for the credits video for ef - the latter tale. was responsible for a 12-part television series ef - a tale of memories. produced for the game. The character design was created by Nobuhiro Sugiyama and the artistic direction was taken over by Megumi Katō. The series was first broadcast from October 7 to December 23, 2007 after midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) by Sun TV , TV Kanagawa followed with an hour offset, TV Saitama and KBS Kyōto with one or two days. From October 22, 2007, the season was broadcast nationwide on AT-X .
A second series called ef - a tale of melodies. with the same staff and also 12 episodes was broadcast exactly one year later from October 7 to December 23, 2008 after midnight, here first on TV Kanagawa; KBS Kyōto and Sun TV followed with a day's delay and nationwide it appeared again on AT-X from November 14, 2008.

The music in the series was composed and produced by Eiichirō Yanagi and Tenmon. The opening credits of the first season is euphoric field by Tenmon feat. Elisa , a Japanese-language version was used for the last episode. The credits were underlaid with the following titles:

Light novel
Two light novels appeared in 2007 under the title MIYAKO ef - a fairy tale of the two. and KEI ef - a fairy tale of the two. 2 at Fujimi Shobo . They were written by Yū Kagami and illustrated by Kinusa Shimotsuki, although the cover illustrations are by Naru Nanao.
Internet radio broadcast
The first Internet radio broadcast on the game under the title Omoshiro Minori Hōsōkyoku ( お も し ろ ミ ノ リ 放送 局 ) was broadcast every Friday from October 2006 to June 2007. It was produced and financed by Onsen, Cospa and Minori. The broadcast of the second series entitled Yumiko & Yūna no Ef Memo Radio ( ゆ み こ & ゆ う な の え ふ メ モ ら じ お ) began at the end of June 2007, and was more based on the anime.
Radio plays
From October 2006 to April 2007 Frontier Works published a series of audio plays on the game on CD. Special CDs followed in November 2007 and January 2008. The voices of the female characters are the same as in the game, but Hiro is spoken by Takashi Shōman and Kyōsuke by Shō Shiroki.
