KK Shaft ( Japanese 株式会社 シ ャ フ ト , Kabushiki-gaisha Shafuto ) is a Japanese animation studio founded on September 1, 1975 by Hiroshi Wakao. More recently, the studio has been known for its unusual humor and a style that often drifts into the experimental. These include newer works such as Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei , the Monogatari series and Puella Magi Madoka Magica .
history
Shaft was founded on September 1, 1975 by Hiroshi Wakao, a former animator for Mushi Productions . It was initially planned to animate independent works. However, the studio often worked as a subcontractor at first. For example, the studio was involved in the production of The Castle of Cagliostro . It was not until 1987 that the first independent work appeared with Yume kara samenai ( 夢 か ら 、 さ な い ), which was followed by others.
In 2000, after the completion of a DVD special by Gunbuster in cooperation with Gainax, the two studios began working together for a longer period of time. Together they produced the series Mahoromatic , Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai and He Is My Master .
After founder Hiroshi Wakao retired in 2004, Mitsutoshi Kubota took over the management. As a result, the drawing department was downsized in favor of the digital workgroup. Since then, Akiyuki Shimbō , Tatsuya Oishi and Shin Ōnuma have worked on most of Shaft's productions, which began with the title Tsukuyomi - Moon Phase , and the studio also developed a distinct style. In many works, the free areas were provided with lettering, which at the same time represent various allusions to other productions. Cross was also repeatedly experimental design techniques and animation styles used that changed from scene to scene and the silhouette , Ben-Day dots , not moving with the characters fill patterns (such as the kimono. The main character in Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei ), to Video recordings mixed with simple animations.
In 2015 the legal form was changed from a Yūgen-gaisha (GmbH) to a Kabushiki-gaisha (joint stock company).
