In a humorous way, she tells the story of a girl suffering from a mental disorder and the influences around her from the perspective of a student of about the same age who supports her in finding her way back to a normal life.

The eight-volume series of novels was published by ASCII Media Works from January 2009 to April 2011 under the imprint Dengeki Bunko . Based on the light novel, an adaptation of the same name was created as a manga , as well as an anime television series that was produced by Shaft .

action

The high school student Makoto Niwa ( 丹羽 真 , Niwa Makoto ) has the habit of giving himself adolescence points , with which he tries to evaluate his own actions during this phase. It is just right for him that, due to family circumstances, from now on he should live with his aunt Meme Tōwa ( 藤 和 女 々 , Tōwa Meme ) and thus hope for various freedoms. After his arrival at the train station, his aunt doesn't meet his expectations at all. Meme, despite her age, she behaves very childishly and also looks much younger than he would like. Not even fully recovered from it, he sees a person wrapped in a futon lying in the entrance of the house . It is all the more astonishing for him that Meme behaves as if this person does not exist at all.

For Makoto, the dream of having a carefree time with his aunt seems to have burst. Above all, he wonders who this person is, who is sitting at the dinner table with you, but is always ignored by Meme. When he can no longer hold back and decides to get his aunt to talk by all means, she only gives him the tip to stay away from the futon carrier, as it would only mean trouble for him. However, it also becomes clear that the girl is Memes daughter Erio Tōwa ( 藤 和 エ リ オ , Tōwa Erio ) and that although she had previously denied having a daughter.

Pushed into this situation, Makoto cannot hold back and can no longer ignore Erio. Outside of his school days, he kept busy with Erio, whose strange statements that she was kidnapped by aliens and that she had a mission keep puzzling him. What depresses him the most is the situation that he never gets to see her because she is always wrapped in the futon and does not take it off even to eat; Instead, the food drops into the top opening. But after he can communicate with her a little, he decides to take her on a trip to the supermarket. To do this, he 'stuffs' them into the shopping basket attached to the front in ET style . When they both stand in front of the store's parking lot, he finally manages to get her to put the futon down. He is extremely surprised to find a good-looking girl with silver-blue long hair who in some ways resembles her mother.

While Makoto gets to the core of her trauma over the next few days, the story also deals with his new classmate Ryūko Mifune ( 御 船 流 子 , Mifune Ryūko ), who later feels more drawn to him. However, it has numerous peculiarities that are not regarded as entirely normal. She tends to underlay her conversations with very pronounced gestures and acoustic noises, while on the way to school she is always wearing a bicycle helmet, which is reminiscent of a yellow construction helmet . Although her real name is Ryūko, she is repeatedly addressed as Ryūshi because of the kanji in her name. Since she does not like this very much, she tries hard to punish and correct any incorrect pronunciation. She is also a vegetarian . But describes himself as a Fruitist ( Frutarian ).

A second school friend joins Ryūko. This is the very tall Maekawa ( 前 川 , Maekawa ), who could be described as normal by all female main characters, if she weren't in the habit of forcing herself into the strangest costumes outside of school while always looking for work - the she mostly goes out at night - people are shocked. Despite her athletic figure, however, she is anything but athletic, which is solely due to the fact that her size makes her dizzy as soon as she lifts her arms above her head. At the same time, she always likes to joke with Ryūko, because she could dispute her 'her friend Makoto'. After all, the two of them often meet in the middle of the night when Makoto is brooding over Erio's future.

Meanwhile, Erio is able to partially put aside her trauma after Makoto is able to convince her in a bicycle accident that she cannot fly, as she initially claimed. With that, Makoto's concern that Erio might take her own life in her delusion vanishes. He also succeeds in improving the relationship between Meme and Erio so much that his aunt recognizes Erio again as her daughter. But Meme doesn’t abandon their childish behavior and uses every opportunity to embarrass Makoto and Erio by trying to seduce him again and again in a not very serious way.

However, returning to a normal life is extremely difficult. Erio can no longer attend school because she has not attended school for too long. In addition, she is extremely notorious in the village, which also prevents her from taking a job.
