Monogatari Series ( Japanese 物語シリーズ , Monogatari Shirīzu ) is a light novel series written by Japanese author Nisio Isin from 2005 , illustrated by the Taiwanese illustrator Vofan and published by Kōdansha .

In 2009, the first two volumes were Bakemonogatari , by the animation studio Shaft as anime - TV series implemented in 2012 was followed by the fourth to sixth band Nisemonogatari and Nekomonogatari Kuro , again as a TV series or miniseries . The following six volumes appeared in July 2013 as the anime series Monogatari Series: Second Season .

Bakemonogatari

The plot centers on third-year high school student Koyomi Araragi , who was attacked and bitten by a vampire during Golden Week a month before the story began . Although he has become a vampire, the circumstances remain unknown, how he became human again through his benefactor Meme Oshino or why the attacking vampire as Shinobu is only a shadow of herself. Since this incident, he has repeatedly drawn attention to various supernatural phenomena, called kaii ( 怪異 ), which have afflicted his classmates in his immediate vicinity.

Hitagi Crab

Almost normal again, Koyomi Araragi sees his classmate Hitagi Senjōgahara falling headlong down a flight of stairs. Without losing a thought, he tries to catch it and notices that it seems unusually light. He learns more about Hitagi through his head girl and good friend Tsubasa Hanekawa , only to be pressured by Hitagi himself not to say a word about anything in the future and to leave her alone. In doing so, she emphasizes her threat and injures him with a staple gun in the corner of his mouth. When he nevertheless follows her to offer her his help, she wants to face him directly, but realizes that the injury she caused has already disappeared through his remaining self-healing powers.

Hitagi Senjōgahara initially accepts his offer with astonishment. He takes her to Meme Oshino, who lives in an abandoned building and is supposed to help her solve her problem, but whom she is suspicious of after years of unsuccessful treatment. After a lengthy discussion, he sends them both home to make preparations so that they can come back to him later that night. In Hitagi's apartment, the two of them have a verbal argument in which she consciously uses her physical stimuli to thank Koyomi on the one hand and to corner him because of his embarrassment.

Later in the evening they return to Memes “apartment”, where at midnight they want to summon the god responsible ( Kami ), who is responsible for Hitagi's extreme weight loss. During the ceremony, the god appears in the form of a crab. This had once taken not only her weight, but rather her painful memories of her mother. The "burden" of these memories of her mother becoming addicted to a sect, of a near-rape of Hitagi by the sect leader, and of the destruction of her entire family, have been removed. From now on she wants to carry and process these memories herself and thereby regain her normal weight.

The next morning, after Koyomi has been rudely woken up by his two sisters, he stands on the scales and finds that his weight has doubled.

Mayoi Snail

Mother's Day - Koyomi, who fled home after an argument with his younger sister Karen over the fact that he was deliberately absent on Mother's Day, runs into Hitagi at a playground. She decides to playfully question him about his personality and shows that she can still have provocative conversations. So she leads him by the nose with her choice of words and engages in various verbal battles with him. Driven again and again and inferior in his argumentation, he discovers a seemingly disoriented young girl named Mayoi Hachikuji in the background. When he sees her running around at a bus stop for a long time, he decides to offer her his help. However, she shows him her deepest dislike and after his defeat deals him another blow in an interview with Hitagi. The ensuing argument ends in a short fight in which Koyomi knocks Mayoi unconscious and he feels like a winner - but only then realizes that he has beaten up an elementary school student.

Mayoi's problem is not finding her way home to her mother. This is said to be due to the ghost of a "lost snail" that prevents it from ever reaching its destination. When Hitagi arrives too, Koyomi asks her if she knows the address she is looking for, as she used to live nearby. Since Hitagi knows the address and leads them through the streets, they eventually have to find that they too get lost on the way every time. Ultimately, Koyomi asks Meme Oshino again for help, who in this case is visited by Hitagi to get the things necessary for a ritual. While Koyomi and Mayoi are waiting in the playground and their moodiness keeps breaking out new quarrels, they also meet Tsubasa Hanekawa on their walk, the Mayoi, like Koyomi at the beginning, shows her deepest dislike. Quickly but lovingly rebuked by Tsubasa, Koyomi begins to find out more about Mayoi's life: As the only child in a divided family, she stayed with her father after the divorce, was not allowed to see her mother again and after a while could no longer touch her face recall. That's why she wanted to visit her mother on Mother's Day.

When Hitagi returns, she apologizes to Koyomi because she could not explain today's events and his behavior. She tells him that she was always afraid of being "different" again because she could neither hear nor see Mayoi. Meme explained to her that Mayoi has been dead for a number of years and can only be seen by people who have the unconscious desire not to go home and that she herself is the ghost of the "lost snail". Hitagi tells them there is a simple trick to lead to their mother's house - and that after that, Koyomi's only problem will be that she has fallen in love with him.

You will reach the place of the address, which is now an empty building plot. Still, Mayoi is overjoyed and says that she is home and disappears. Koyomi, confused by Hitagi's admission of love, is confronted by her because she has not yet received an answer from him. Hopelessly inferior to her again, he replies her feelings, but doesn't want them to hide anything from each other in the future.

The next morning on the way to school, Koyomi surprisingly meets Mayoi again. She explains to him that she was “promoted” from a “localized spirit” (地縛霊jibaku-rei ) to a “wandering spirit” (浮游霊fuyū-rei ) and that they will meet again from time to time.

The main feature in her relationship with Koyomi is that she always addresses him as Aragi, Arararagi or Ararararagi, whereupon he replies that she mispronounces his name, she then says with pretended sweet behavior that she made a mistake and then annoys him responds to it to tell the truth. Koyomi's greeting to her is always a form of physical sexual harassment .

Suruga monkey

During another encounter between Mayoi and Koyomi, a student from the lower school storms past and introduces herself to Koyomi as Suruga Kanbaru . She tries to engage him in a superficial conversation to find out something about Hitagi Senjōgahara. When he later asks Hitagi about Suruga, she reacts negatively and aggressively to this topic. After the situation eased faster than it occurred, she tells him that she and Suruga used to be best friends until she too found out Hitagi's secret. Thereupon she threatened her in a similar way as it was the case with Koyomi, with the difference that Suruga stayed away from her as intended.

From Tsubasa he learns that both of them were the stars of their sports teams in middle school and got along very well. On his way home from Hitagi, he is attacked at a level crossing by a person in a raincoat and remains seriously injured on the train tracks. When Hitagi suddenly appears, the creature has disappeared, instead she tells him that he forgot the money for Meme Oshino's help with her and that she wanted to punish him for it. But she stays with him until his injuries have healed.

The next day he meets with Suruga and receives an apology for her attack on him. She tells him that after the death of her parents she found a monkey's paw, which has now attacked her left arm and is under a bandage. Since then, she has temporarily lost control of her arm. She also admits that she is a lesbian and Hitagi is her unrequited love. Much more shocked by this, he takes her to Meme Oshino, who immediately clarifies the truth about her situation.

After Suruga's parents died and she was unable to integrate into a new school, she found a dried monkey paw that she hoped would grant her wishes. So she wished she was the fastest runner. In fact, the following day the fastest students were absent from school due to illness. Suruga, on the other hand, had a dream in which she beat these students in a horrific way. When she read the story " The Monkey Paw ", she was shocked by the effect of her wishes and hid them. However, when she found out about Hitagi's problem, she looked for the paw again to help her, but stopped using it after Hitagi's threats. It was only when Suruga saw a year later that Hitagi had found her love in Koyomi that she wanted Hitagi's love and Koyomi's death through her jealousy.

Meme explains to them that it is not " the monkey paw", but rather a "Rainy Devil", a lower demon who makes wishes in a similar way. If this demon cannot grant a wish, it will withdraw. Koyomi therefore plans to let himself be killed by the demon, which his remaining vampire abilities make it difficult, if not impossible, and so Suruga's wish cannot be fulfilled. In the fight, however, Koyomi quickly reaches his limits when not only the demon in Suruga's left arm attacks her with her whole body. Suddenly Hitagi steps into the room, calling Meme behind Koyomi's back. At the beginning of their relationship, they made a promise that they would keep no secrets from each other: Koyomi hadn't mentioned Suruga's problem to her and she told him that she would kill him for it. In view of his condition, having already passed several deaths, she wants to forgive him this time. When the demon wants to attack again in Suruga, Hitagi stands between the two and explains that if Koyomi dies, she will kill Suruga in any case. The demon can no longer fulfill Suruga's wish, Suruga breaks down crying and confesses her love, which Hitagi cannot return, but wishes Suruga to stay by her side.

The next morning Suruga accompanies him to Hitagi. She learned from Meme Oshino that the demon had disappeared, but that her arm would not be normal for a long time.

Nadeko Snake

It's been six years since Koyomi saw Nadeko Sengoku . So he doesn't recognize her immediately when he goes to a shrine with Suruga, where they are supposed to attach a kind of talisman for Meme Oshino. When you arrive at the shrine, you will initially only find dilapidated buildings. While carrying out Memes' assignment and placing the document at the temple, Suruga recently discovered ritually killed snakes scattered all over the place.

He first asks Tsubasa to find out some information about this type of ritual for him. In a library he first receives books for school from her and learns that this shrine is dedicated to a snake god. At the same time, she rebukes him that it cannot be good if he is always nice to everyone and he will put his relationship with Hitagi at risk. She says that he has to set limits to the approaches of Suruga and demonstratively comes very close to him for a kiss. When she got a headache, she said goodbye to Koyomi. When he recognizes Nadeko Sengoku out of the corner of his eye, rummaging through books on magic and the occult, he tries to speak to her, but loses her in the corridors. At the shrine, he meets with Suruga again because he suspects that she wants to hold another ritual. In fact, they meet them and stop them from killing any more snakes. Nadeko also remembers Koyomi, the big brother of her only friend at the time, who she loved as a child.

At Koyomi's home, Suruga first tries to find out his porn magazines and secret fetishes, even if she thinks she already knows them. The argument cheers up Nadeko and she finds trust in the two, whereupon she strips and sits naked in front of them the next moment. They realize that her body is covered with pressure marks from the neck down and she asks them to help her.

Meme Oshino recognizes from Koyomi's description that it must be a snake shrike. This is activated by a malicious curse on a certain person: In Nadeko's case, a friend whose best friend confessed his love to her and Nadeko rejected him. He also says that she reacted correctly and tried to lift the curse by killing snakes, but that she did not perform the ritual completely correctly and was just very unlucky.

Back home, Koyomi tells Suruga and Nadeko that they will repeat the ritual tonight. He tells Suruga that Nadeko will die if they don't make it. When they arrive at the shrine, they begin the ritual and the curse seems to have been successfully released from Nadeko. When Nadeko doubles up in pain, it suddenly becomes clear to Koyomi that the boy whom Nadeko had rejected must have cursed her too and that they must have been dealing with two snakes. Although Meme advised against it, he tries to tear the invisible serpent from Nadeko's body and is attacked by it himself. The snake is now trying to cross over to the severely damaged Koyomi. But he is saved by Suruga, who explains to him that the snake will disappear if they keep quiet. Horrified by the realization that the curse has now passed to the perpetrator, the snake leaves the shrine and Nadeko is saved. Even when she thanks for her rescue, Koyomi can not accept this inwardly, because he wanted to protect not only Nadeko, but also those who caused the curse.

Tsubasa Cat

During Golden Week, Koyomi and Tsubasa Hanekawa are on a walk together. She tells him about her neglect in her foster family and therefore doesn't want to stay home at any cost on days off like these. She confides in him that she was beaten by her foster father that morning and urgently asks him to keep it a secret. She discovers a run over cat on the street and asks Koyomi to help her with the cat.

A short time later, Tsubasa had a severe headache, whereupon she transformed in front of Koyomi: Her dark hair turned white, her cat ears grew and with the gestures of a cat, she jumped up a tree and ran away. Meme explains to him that this being corresponds to a personality split that is triggered by stress, attacks people indiscriminately and takes away their life energy. After several sacrifices, Koyomi tries to capture the cat, but is ultimately caught and threatened by her when Shinobu suddenly appears and the cat bites, sucks out its life energy and finally transforms itself back into Tsubasa.

A few days after Nadeko Sengoku was rescued, Hitagi asks Koyomi if they would like to go out on their first date that evening, something that surprises Koyomi and he agrees with anticipation. After school ends, Nadeko waits in front of the school exit to give Suruga back the clothes she has borrowed from the ritual. However, Suruga storms past her and when Koyomi meets her a short time later, also in a hurry to meet Hitagi, he offers her to accept it. When Tsubasa meets both of them while leaving the school premises, Nadeko runs away, scared and intimidated. Slightly offended by the situation, Tsubasa says that her schoolmates are spreading rumors about him and Hitagi, but she believes that Hitagi has changed for the better since she started dating Koyomi. When he tries to ask her if there is anyone special in her life, Tsubasa has a severe headache again, but she tries to calm Koyomi down and that he should take good care of Hitagi.

When Koyomi appears at Hitagi's in the evening, he is dragged directly into her father's car and they drive, together with her father, to a piece of forest outside the city. During the journey, Hitagi provokes him several times to make confessions of love, which, intimidated by the presence of her father, he does not utter, but instead often uses his tone. Her father sits quietly at the wheel the whole time. It was only when Hitagi got out of the car at the forest to make some preparations that her father spoke to Koyomi: He confessed to him that he was never a good father for her, but that he trusted her judgment. He asks him to be there for Hitagi and take care of her. When Hitagi is back at the car she leads Koyomi into a clearing in the forest, where they can see a full starry sky.

Arriving at the school the next morning, Koyomi receives a message from Tsubasa, who is waiting in the playground in pajamas where they met Mayoi. At the same time he meets Hitagi, who lets him go surprisingly understandingly when he indicates that he has to help "someone". When he arrives at the playground, the embarrassed Tsubasa shows him that she has grown cat ears again over the night, but that she has otherwise not changed any further. Koyomi tries to find a solution himself before they go to Meme Oshino, where Tsubasa is of no help with her information. When Meme arrives, he makes short work, since he has little time left, and knocks her unconscious, whereupon she completely transforms into the white-haired cat. While Koyomi and Meme have her tied to a pole on the roof, they try to find the cause and a solution to the problem. Meme tells him that the cause is obvious - but doesn't reveal it - and that Shinobu is no longer there.

Koyomi goes in search of Shinobu and asks Mayoi, Nadeko and Suruga for help. While they are supporting him, Hitagi refuses his request, as Tsubasa has already asked her to take over her duties as head girl for them. In the meantime, Meme Oshino discovers that the cat has freed itself from its bonds. In the distance he still spots Koyomi, calls out and waves to him, which Koyomi can't do anything with at this moment. In the evening, exhausted from the unsuccessful search, the cat meets Koyomi and surprisingly offers to help him in the search. Not without prejudice he accepts your help, yet he does not notice that the cat is pursuing its own plan. Through her he learns that the cause of their stress lies in the fact that Tsubasa had already fallen in love with him when they first met and Hitagi suddenly and unexpectedly became his girlfriend. Since the cat is uncomfortable with this, she decides to eliminate the cause by killing Koyomi. She is also always known where Shinobu is and lures Koyomi under a bright lantern to attack him there. In a moment of inattention, when Koyomi calls Shinobu for help, Shinobu climbs out of his shadow, attacks the cat and sucks its energy out of it with one bite until it transforms back into Tsubasa.

The next morning, after Koyomi was rudely woken up by his two sisters, he drives to Meme Oshino and now realizes that Meme has left town as announced and said goodbye to him in his own way. Meme was sure that Koyomi could solve the problem with the cat on her own - since he too knew all along that Shinobu will from now on live in Koyomi's shadow.

Characters

Koyomi Araragi ( 阿良々木暦 , Araragi Koyomi ): Koyomi is the protagonist of Bakemonogatari and a student in the third year of high school, who has his problems with all subjects except mathematics . In the run-up to the plot, however, he was attacked by a vampire and turned himself into one. With the help of Meme Oshino, he was able to become almost completely human again. Some side effects are that his injuries still heal faster and he can see in the dark. Despite the fact that he's no longer a real vampire and no longer has to fear the sunlight, he is still scared when the sun comes up in the morning.

Hitagi Senjōgahara ( 戦場ヶ原ひたぎ , Senjōgahara Hitagi ): Hitagi is the main character in the Hitagi Crab plot . Initially, she suffers from the influence of a god who drastically reduces her weight, which makes her feel rejected and tries by all means to hide her abnormality. She reacts very aggressively and puts everyone under pressure who gets behind her secret. She calls herself Tsundere and usually speaks in an insulting and condescending manner, but this hides her insecurity. After her recovery, her relationship with Koyomi continues to grow and she becomes his steadfast friend.

Tsubasa Hanekawa ( 羽川翼 , Hanekawa Tsubasa )

Meme Oshino ( 忍野メメ , Oshino Meme ): Meme is a middle-aged man who lives in an abandoned building. He is an expert on supernatural appearances (kaii) such as ghosts, demons and gods, which he can seemingly subjugate with ease. He helps Koyomi and the girls with their problems, even if only for a fee. In addition, he always strives for a balance of forces, which is expressed in the fact that on the one hand he supports Koyomi, on the other hand he does not always warn him about mistakes or even act himself.

Shinobu Oshino ( 忍野忍 , Oshino Shinobu )

Mayoi Hachikuji ( 八九寺真宵 , Hachikuji Mayoi ): Mayoi is an elementary school student and the main character of the Mayoi Snail section . She usually carries around an oversized, fully packed backpack that makes her shadow look like a snail. In addition, as a primary school student, she has many speech defects and is very moody. As it turns out in the plot, she is the ghost of a child who died 11 years ago, who had to stay with his father after his parents divorced and never saw his mother again. Since then, Mayoi has been unstoppable in search of her mother's house, but cannot find it. In addition, it may only have been seen by people who internally have an aversion to returning home. After solving her problem, she initially disappears, but a short time later returns as "promoted" to the wandering ghost, who frequently pays Koyomi a visit.

Suruga Kanbaru ( 神原駿河 , Kanbaru Suruga ): Suruga Kanbaru is a classmate of Koyomi, Hitagi and Tsubasa in the lower year and the main character in the story section Suruga Monkey . She is a happy, curious, boyish girl, but also lesbian, masochistic, exhibitionistic, a Fujoshi and a Lolicon . She was a Hitagi Kōhai in middle school and fell in love with her at that time. When she also switched to high school, she noticed Hitagi's change and was threatened by her, like Koyomi later, and followed her wish not to approach her any more. When she finds out that Hitagi and Koyomi are a couple, because of her jealousy of Koyomi, she is attacked by a demon, from which she can be partially freed through a trick by Meme Oshino. Even if Hitagi cannot return her love for her, she befriends her and Koyomi again and helps him to free Nadeko from her curse.

Nadeko Sengoku ( 千石撫子 , Sengoku Nadeko ): Nadeko Sengoku is a former friend of Koyomi's youngest sister Tsukihi and is the main character in the plot section Nadeko Snake . As a child she had no other friends apart from Tsukihi and as an only child she always wanted a big brother whom she found in Koyomi. Years later and lost sight of each other, they meet again when a spurned admirer and his jealous admirer strike her with a curse. She is actually very shy and reserved, but is easy to cheer up and quickly finds trust in Koyomi and Suruga again. When she meets Tsubasa for the first time, however, she runs away from her, completely intimidated. She has a strong dislike for others to look her in the eye, which is expressed in the fact that she fends off Koyomi when he pushed her bangs aside, but didn't mind when he lifted her skirt.

Publications

The series was written by the author Nisio Isin and was initially short stories that he wrote for the magazine Mephisto in the issues 9/2005 (August 2005) to 5/2006 (April 2006). From November 1, 2006, these and some newly written stories were combined into an initially two-volume light novel series called Bakemonogatari ( 化物語 , German about: "Ghost story", a suitcase word from Bakemono and Monogatari ), which from Kōdansha under the imprint Kōdansha Box on November 1st and December 4th 2006. The drawings in the book series were made by Taiwanese illustrator Vofan. The first issue included the three stories Hitagi Crab ( ひたぎクラブ , Hitagi Kurabu ), Mayoi Maimai ( まよいマイマイ ) and Suruga Monkey ( するがモンキー , Suruga Monkī ). The second volume contained two previously unpublished stories. These were Nadeko Snake ( なでこスネイク , Nadeko Suneiku ) and Tsubasa Cat ( つばさキャット , Tsubasa Kyatto ).

Almost two years later, Koyomi Vamp ( こよみヴァンプ , Koyomi Vampu ) was a prequel that dealt with the protagonist's past and was printed in the first issue of Pandora magazine. The chapters were later published on May 7, 2008 under the title Kizumonogatari ( 傷物語 , "damaged-goods-history").

In the same year, the sequel Nisemonogatari ( 偽物語 , “Cheat Story”), the first volume of which contained the story Karen Bee ( かれんビー , Karen Bī ), followed on September 2, 2008. The second volume contained the “final chapter ” ( 最終話 , saishūwa ) Tsukihi Phoenix ( つきひフェニックス , Tsukihi Fenikkusu ) and has been published since June 10, 2009.

Nekomonogatari ( 猫物語 , "cat story") is divided into two volumes, which appeared on July 29 and October 27, 2010: kuro ( 黒 , "black") with the "forbidden chapter" ( 第禁話 , dai-kin -wa ) Tsubasa Family ( つばさファミリー , Tsubasa Famirī ) and whose plot is located between Kizumonogatari and Bakemonogatari , as well as shiro ( 白 , "white") with the "confidential chapter" ( 第懇話 , dai-kon-wa ) Tsubasa Tiger ( つばさタイガー , Tsubasa Taigā ), the action of which follows Nisemonogatari . All previous volumes including kuro form a superordinate first cycle (here called first season ), while the second series cycle ( second season ) begins with shiro .

On December 25, 2010, the band Kabukimonogatari ( 傾物語 ) followed with the “chatterbox” ( 第閑話 , dai-kan-wa ) Mayoi Kyonshī ( まよいキョンシー ), where Kyonshī is the Japanese pronunciation of the Cantonese word Geungsi , which means an undead who in turn is spoken in standard Chinese as Jiang Shi . In 2011 came out with Hanamonogatari ( 花物語 , "flower story ") with the "strange chapter" ( 第変話 , dai-hen-wa ) Suruga Devil , the band Otorimonogatari ( 囮物語 , " bait story "): Nadeko Medusa , Onimonogatari ( 鬼物語 , " Demon Story "): Shinobu Time and Koimonogatari ( 恋物語 ): Hitagi End a total of four more stories.

The cycle called final season , but not final, consists of the volumes Tsukimonogatari ( 憑物語 , for example: “Obsession Spirit Story”) from September 26, 2012, Koyomimonogatari ( 暦物語 ) from May 22, 2013, Owarimonogatari ( 終物語 , “Final story ") In three volumes from October 21, 2013, January 29, and April 1, 2014, as well as Zokuowarimonogatari ( 続終物語 ," Continued closing story ") from September 17, 2014.

A sequel called next season with the novel Tsugimonogatari ( 接物語 , "Patch Story") was announced in September 2014.

From November 2012 to November 2013, 620,000 copies were sold, making it 7th in the best-selling light novel series of the year.

In February 2015, Vertical licensed the then unfilmed novel Kizumonogatari for the English-speaking area, which was first published at the request of Nisio Isin's editor.

Anime

Bakemonogatari

The production of the adaptation of Bakemonogatari as an anime television series was announced in April 2008. As part of the Nisio Isin Anime Project by Kodansha and Aniplex , the series was produced at the Shaft animation studio . Akiyuki Shimbō directed the film together with his assistant Tatsuya Oishi. The script was written by Fuyashi Tō. Akio Watanabe developed the character design based on Vofan's template . The music for the series was made by Satoru Kōsaki under the direction of Yota Tsuruoka.

On Japanese television, the series was broadcast from July 3 to September 25, 2009 on Tokyo MX with the first twelve episodes, while the series comprises a total of 15 episodes. The TV stations MBS , TV Saitama , TV Kanagawa , TV Aichi , Chiba TV , TVQ Kyūshū , TV Hokkaidō and BS Japan followed within a week , and later from August AT-X . The last three episodes were available as web anime on the official website, where the 13th episode was released on November 3, 2009, the 14th episode on February 24, 2010, and the 15th and final episode on June 25, 2010.

While the first episode did without an opening credits or replaced it with one specially made for the episode, the supposedly regular opening credits were shown in the second episode. It was underlaid with the title staple stable , sung by the voice actress Chiwa Saitō . For the different plot sections, this was replaced several times by an opening credits closer to the main character. In the credits , the title Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari from supercell was used and only the animation was adapted to the main character of the story. The single was released on August 12, 2009. The episodes were released from September 30, 2009 to July 28, 2010 on six DVDs and Blu-rays. A new release as a Blu-ray box followed on December 21, 2011.

After the successor Nisemonogatari , already licensed by Aniplex of America for North America, was fully broadcast, the company announced the licensing of Bakemonogatari on April 6, 2012 . The series, subtitled in English, was initially streamed on Crunchyroll on September 14, 2012 and was released on six Blu-rays on November 20, including the translation of the audio commentary, which is as long as the entire series.

Nisemonogatari

On September 15, 2011 it was confirmed that the sequel Nisemonogatari will be released as an anime series in spring 2012. The first broadcast of the first of 11 episodes took place at midnight on 7/8. January on Tokyo MX , Tochigi TV and Gunma TV and ran until 17./18. March. TV Saitama , TV Aichi and MBS followed within a few hours , and Chiba TV , TV Kanagawa , TV Hokkaidō and TVQ Kyūshū followed within a week . Right from the start, the series was licensed for North America by Aniplex of America and streamed as a simulcast for the Japanese premiere, also with English subtitles on Crunchyroll .

The episodes were released from April 25th to August 22nd, 2012 on 5 DVDs and Blu-rays.

Kizumonogatari

With the publication of the tenth volume Otorimonogatari on July 28, 2011, it became known that the prehistory or the 3rd volume Kizumonogatari will be implemented as an anime movie. This was originally planned for 2012, but was then postponed.

Nekomonogatari (Kuro)

After the director Akiyuki Shimbō already expressed his interest in filming all volumes of novels at the beginning of the broadcast of Nisemonogatari, this project got the official green light at the beginning of April. These are also to be implemented as television series. Nekomonogatari (kuro) received its own 4-part television series, which was broadcast on December 31, 2012 on Tokyo MX and BS11 .

The episodes were streamed with English subtitles on Daisuki.net in July 2013.

Second season

The second novel cycle ( second season ) with the six volumes from Nekomonogatari (shiro) to Koimonogatari is summarized as a 26-part television series. This has been broadcast since July 7, 2013 (at midnight and thus on the previous television day) on TV Tokyo, TV Kanagawa, Tochigi TV and Gunma TV, as well as with an offset of up to a week on Chiba TV, TV Saitama, TV Aichi, Mainichi Hōsō , TVQ Kyūshū and TV Hokkaidō.

The series was also licensed from Aniplex of America prior to airing. These allow it to be streamed on Daisuki.net as a simulcast with English subtitles in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, and a month later on Crunchyroll.

Bakemonogatari's Blu-ray releases all started at # 1 with the exception of fourth, which was beaten by Michael Jackson's This Is It . The third Blu-ray was there after Evangelion: 1.11 - You Are (Not) Alone. only the second Blu-ray release with more than 40,000 copies sold in the first week. In the important first week of the six Blu-ray Disc discs and DVDs that were released, many were sold as follows:

A total of around 331,000 Blu-rays were sold by September 2010, making it the anime series with the highest Blu-ray sales by then until it was released by K-On! was replaced. Nevertheless, Blu-ray # 6 held the record for the most sold anime Blu-rays in the first week until the end of April 2011, when it was replaced by Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika , by the same director and studio.

The Blu-ray Disc Box as a limited edition from December 21, 2011 rose to number 2 in the charts with 22,080 copies sold in the first week, and 31,552 copies sold by December 9, 2012.

259,973 copies of Nisemonogatari were sold on Blu-rays by December 9, 2012, making it by far the most successful anime production of the year.

By September 2012, both series had sold more than a million DVDs and Blu-rays.
