Supercell ( spelling supercell ) is a Japanese eleven-piece music group around the composer and lyricist Ryo, which was founded in 2007 as a dojin music group (self-published independent music ). Initially, Supercell used the vocal synthesizer Miku Hatsune for their pieces, which they put on the video portal Nico Nico Douga . The popularity of these songs led the group to release a self-produced album called Supercell on Comiket 74 in August 2008. Supercell finally got a contract with Sony Music Entertainment Japan , where a professional new edition of this album with further tracks and a DVD was released in March 2009. Their first single Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari followed in August of the same year, with the singing of Nagi Yanagi uploaded the songs previously sung under the name Gazelle to Nico Nico Douga. Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari was the first Supercell release that did not use Miku Hatsune and was created as the final title of the anime series Bakemonogatari . This was followed by three more singles in 2010, one of which was a split single with dojin musician Kz from Livetune . Supercell's second album Today Is A Beautiful Day was released in March 2011.

history
2007–2008: Foundation and independent publications
On December 7, 2007, Ryo uploaded the song Melt ( メ ル ト , Meruto ), sung by the vocaloid vocal synthesizer Miku Hatsune , to the Nico Nico Douga Internet video portal . By February 2010 it had been viewed there over five million times. Ryo used an illustration of Miku by the draftsman 119 ( pronounced Hikeshi ) without having obtained his permission. After Ryo contacted 119 with an apology, 119 showed great interest in Melt and began working with Ryo to create Supercell. Over time, more members joined in, so Supercell grew to 11 members at the time of their major debut. In an article in The Japan Times , Ryo stated that he had no "great ambitions" in uploading Melt to Nico Nico Douga and that he was not "set out to succeed".
Ryo published his music through Nico Nico Douga because he liked the website and its comment system. Ryo did not intend to use Miku Hatsune as a singer from the start and she was unknown to most Supercell members until Melt gained popularity. Since Ryo didn't know any singers, friends recommended that he use Miku, which he thought was a good idea as videos with her were already widely used on Nico Nico Douga.
In 2008, Supercell released more songs that quickly became popular. Koi wa Sensō ( 恋 は 戦 争 ) from February 22nd, World is Mine ( ワ ー ル ド イ ズ マ イ ン , Wārudo izu Main ) from May 31st and Black Rock Shooter ( ブ ラ ッ ク ★ ロ ッ ク ク シ ュ ー タ ー , Burakku Rokku all from June 13th) viewed a million times. On Nico Nico Douga, World is Mine and Black Rock Shooter both reached first position in the daily rankings. Ryo composed the piece Kibō no Neiro ( キ ボ ウ ノ ネ イ ロ ), which was released on July 15, 2008 as a Limited Edition Image Song CD with the fifth volume of Shū Shirase's light novel series Oto × Maho . The CD alone was only sold by Animate and Comic Toranoana , with the Animate version sung by Miku Hatsune and the Toranoana version sung by the human singer Sari.
At Comiket 74 in August 2008, Supercell released their first album of the same name, Supercell , which contained their most popular songs and other previously unreleased songs. On December 12, 2008, Hajimete no Koi ga Owaru Toki ( 初 め て の 恋 が 終 わ る 時 ) appeared on Nico Nico Douga, where it stayed at the top of the daily rankings for three days and was viewed over a million times. This should be the last song Supercell uploaded to Nico Nico Douga.
2009–2011: Major debut and singer Nagi Yanagi
Supercell made their major debut with Sony Music Entertainment Japan with a professional re-release of the Supercell album on March 4, 2009. This album contained the art book that was included in the earlier independent version, additional songs and a DVD with music videos of four tracks. The album reached number 4 on the weekly Oricon album charts and was awarded gold status by the Recording Industry Association of Japan in June 2009 for over 100,000 copies sold within one year. Supercell's first major single Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari ( 君 の 知 ら な い 物語 ) was released on August 12, 2009 and reached number 5 on the Oricon weekly singles chart. The A-side Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari was created as the final title of the anime series Bakemonogatari . The single also contained two pieces that were created for the anime film Cencoroll . The single was the first release in which Supercell did not use Miku Hatsune, but Nagi Yanagi as the singer. Supercell was selected as one of the five best young artists of 2009 at the Japan Gold Disc Award 2010.
Her second single Sayonara Memories ( さよならメモリーズ, Sayonara Memorīzu ) was published on 10 February 2010. Super Cells third single Utakata Hanabi / Hoshi ga Matataku Konna Yoru ni ( うたかた花火/星が瞬くこんな夜に), a double-A-Single, was released on August 25, 2010. Utakata Hanabi was used as the 14th end title of the anime series Naruto Shippūden and Hoshi ga Matataku Konna Yoru ni as the end credits for Type-Moon's visual novel Mahōtsukai no Yoru . Supercell released a split single in collaboration with Kz from Livetune called Kotchi Muite Baby / Yellow ( こ っ ち 向 い て Baby / Yellow) which was the thematic title of the game Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2nd . Ryo composed Kotchi Muite Baby and Kz Yellow . The single was released on Sony Music Direct on July 14, 2010 and was Supercell's first release since their debut album to use Miku Hatsune as a singer. Supercell produced the song Hero ( ヒ ー ロ ー , Hīrō ) as the theme song for Shueisha's manga magazine Aoharu , a special edition of Young Jump , the first edition of which was released on November 30, 2010. The full version of this track was released for preview on Sony Music's website that same day.
On July 24, 2010, the 50-minute original video animation project Black Rock Shooter was released , based on Supercell's eponymous song and music video with Huke's illustrations. A " pilot version " was released on September 30, 2009 on DVD and Blu-Ray. Ryo and Huke are working on this project together with project leader Yutaka Yamamoto and his animation studio Ordet; The director was Shinobu Yoshioka. Black Rock Shooter was Ordet's first in-house production as the lead animation studio. Some excerpts were shown at the major US anime exhibition Anime Expo on July 4, 2010.
At the end of 2010, INCS toenter founded the record label TamStar Records for musicians and artists who originally produced dojin music. Supercell was one of the inaugural members, which also included Livetune, Gom, Rapbit, and Nagi Yanagi. Supercell collaborated on the compilation TamStar Records Collection Vol. 0 , which was released as a limited edition on Comiket 79 in December 2010, with the pieces Kibō no Neiro sung by Miku Hatsune and Ashita e ( ア シ タ ヘ ) sung by Rapbit and Clear. TamStar Records also released a remix album called Stowaways of Supercell's debut album as a tribute to the band on this comiket . Supercell's second studio album, Today Is A Beautiful Day , was released on March 16, 2011.
2011 – today: Singers Koeda and Chelly
Supercell auditioned from May 25th to June 19th 2011 as a guest singer for their third album. Of the 2000 candidates, two girls won: 15-year-old Koeda and 17-year-old Chelly. Supercell worked with dojin musician Dixie Flatline on the split single Sekiranun Graffiti / Fallin 'Fallin' Fallin ' ( 積 乱 雲 グ ラ フ ィ テ ィ / Fallin' Fallin 'Fallin', Sekiranun Gurafiti / ~ ), which was released on August 31, 2011 on Sony Music Direct appeared with Miku Hatsune as the singer. Sekiranun Graffiti by Ryo and Fallin 'Fallin' Fallin ' by Dixie Flatline . Sekiranun Graffiti was used as the opening title for the game Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Extend .
