Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari ( Japanese 君 の 知 ら な い 物語 , eng. "The story you don't know") is a J-pop song by the Japanese group Supercell , written by Ryo. Supercell released it on their Sony Music debut single in August 2009. Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari was the closing title of the anime series Bakemonogatari , while the B-side Love & Roll was the theme song of the anime Cencoroll . A music video was produced for the piece, directed by Hirohisa Sasaki. Thematically, the song is about u unrequited love .

The single was Supercell's first release that did not use the Hatsune Miku vocaloid vocal synthesizer , as was the case with their debut album Supercell . Instead, Supercell was able to win over the singer Nagi, who previously posted cover versions on the video website Nico Nico Douga under the name Gazelle .

It reached number 5 in the weekly Oricon single charts and was awarded gold status by the Recording Industry Association of Japan in February 2010 with 100,000 copies sold within one year .

History of origin

During the production of the anime series Bakemonogatari 2009, Supercell was offered to compose the closing title. It was already planned that Supercell will release their debut album of the same name in March 2009, using the vocaloid vocal synthesizer Hatsune Miku as a singer. Instead of Miku, Supercell was able to win the singer Nagi, who previously posted cover versions on the video platform Nico Nico Douga under the name Gazelle. Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari was the first Supercell release that did not use Miku as a singer. Nagi was chosen for Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari by Supercell's composer and lyricist Ryo, who was already a fan of her voice before he started uploading his pieces to Nico Nico Douga in late 2007. About the next day after Ryo Supercell uploaded Supercell's first song Melt to Nico Nico Douga in December 2007, Nagi did the same with a cover of her of that track. Nagi, who is also a fan of Ryo's music, contacted him and they both talked about wanting to work together one day. Their first collaboration was to be Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari , with Nagi also being the singer for Supercell's second album, Today Is A Beautiful Day . However, she is not officially a member of Supercell.

Regarding the switch to a human singer, Ryo said "that although he loses absolute control over the tone for each individual phase, working with a singer adds a human element that resonates better with the audience". After Ryo Miku used Hatsune for the demo for Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari , he first thought the range would exhaust a human singer, but was pleased that Nagi had the same vocal range as Miku.

composition

Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari is a J-pop song with instrumentation by electric guitar , bass guitar , drums and piano . According to a score published by Yamaha Music Media, the piece is set in 44 time in A major at a tempo of 165  bpm . The intro starts with the piano accompanied by Nagi's vocals and then uses a bridge to add guitar and drums to lead on to the first verse. Another bridge is used between the first and second verses, both of which use the same music but different lyrics. A break is used after the third stanza , followed by the fourth stanza. After a short outro, an instrumental coda is used to conclude the song. When Ryo wrote the lyrics, he did not want to use the tone or style of the underlying Bakemonogatari novels because he felt that the writer Nisio Isin would appreciate a more original piece. So he wrote a different story borrowing from the general plot of the novels. The lyrics are about a girl with an unrequited love who could never convey her feelings to her loved one.

The cover uses an illustration of the summer triangle in the starry sky by Shirow Miwa . The summer triangle is also mentioned in the second verse of the song, as is star gazing throughout the lyrics. The artistic direction and design are from Yoshiki Usa. Both are members of Supercell. Ryo played the piece to Miwa and Usa beforehand and roughly described its theme, but gave them full freedom in terms of the graphic design.

Publication and reception

Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari was released on August 12, 2009 in a limited and a regular version on CD by Sony Music in Japan. The limited version also contained a DVD with a music video and a TV commercial for Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari , as well as stickers with illustrations by Supercell member Redjuice depicting characters from Bakemonogatari . The song peaked at number 5 on the Oricon weekly singles chart and sold over 30,000 times in its first week. The following week, it stayed in the top 10 at number 6 and stayed on the charts for 66 weeks. Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari entered the Billboard Japan Hot 100 at number 9. In January 2010, Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari received gold status from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for 100,000 music downloads sold on mobile phones ( Chaku Uta Full ), and in February 2010 a gold record for 100,000 physical copies sold within one year.

Music video

The music video was shot in the city of Chōshi , with the Tokawa station of the Chōshi railway and the Inubōsaki lighthouse also visible. The video was directed by Hirohisa Sasaki. In the video, neither a member of Supercell nor the singer Nagi appear, but instead actors Marika Fukunaga, Shuto Tanabe and Naho Kitade, who play members of a high school astronomy club along with five other people. Fukunaga, Tanabe and Kitade are in a love triangle in which Fukunaga has feelings for Tanabe, who in turn wants to enter into a relationship with Kitade. Time goes by from summer vacation to graduation. Tanabe gives Fukunaga a popsicle stick with his address in Tokyo, where he wants to move, and says goodbye at Kitade train station, indicating that he has broken up with Fukunaga and now wants to start a new relationship with Fukunaga. After some more time, Fukunaga is shown tossing the popsicle stick into the ocean after reminding herself of her time with Tanabe. Finally, the video ends with a look back at how Fukunaga, Tanabe and Kitade happily look at the summer triangle at Inubōsaki lighthouse. Within the video, the summer triangle is shown twice as an allusion to the beginning of the second stanza that mentions it.
