Tsundere ( Japanese ツ ン デ レ ) is a term used to describe a specific Japanese character archetype in works of Japanese pop culture.

Tsundere is a mostly female character type who is characterized by a bitchy and quarrelsome manner, but behaves reserved and lovable under certain circumstances, for example when he or she is alone with someone. Since the term spread in everyday language mainly via the Internet, the definitions vary greatly from one another. So other types of characters who differ in both sex and species are sometimes referred to as Tsundere . Originally (eg. By Japanese Ren'ai games Ren'ai adventure and Ren'ai simulations ) and especially eroge coined the term spread in the fandom of otaku and Moe connoisseurs worldwide, to Anime , Manga , Literature and even mass media .

To explain the popularity of this character type, the psychologist Yoshihito Naitō refers to a study by the cognitive psychologist Gerald L. Clore et al. from 1975, in which 338 test subjects were shown videos of a conversation between a woman and a man in four variants: 1. the woman is always friendly towards the man, 2. the woman is initially friendly and becomes more dismissive over time, 3. the Woman is initially dismissive and becomes friendlier over time, 4. The woman is always dismissive. It turned out that most of the test subjects perceived the woman from Video 3 as the most attractive.

term

The word tsundere is made up of the two Japanese words tsuntsun and deredere . Tsuntsun ( ツ ン ツ ン ) here means "unsociable, bad-tempered, curmudgeonly", but has its origins in onomatopoeia for oneself with a nosy turn away. Deredere ( デ レ デ レ ) in turn means "flirting, in love".

Both terms to describe such a character type can be found in the 1971 manga Kōkōsei Buraihikae by Kazuo Koike .

The combination of the two as tsuntsun deredere probably first appeared in an entry in the BBS Ayashii World @ Zantei ( あ や し い わ ー る ど @ 暫定 ) on August 29, 2002 to describe the character Ayu Daikūji from the computer game Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and then in November Shortening than tsundere .

The term Tsunderekko ( ツ ン デ レ っ 娘 ) is used in a substantiated form, denoting a girl with a described personality. The term Deretsun ( デ レ ツ ン ), which results from the reversed word order, but describes the same properties, is less common .

Examples

The voice actress Rie Kugimiya is known for Tsundere roles like Shana from Shakugan no Shana , Louise from Zero no Tsukaima , Taiga from Toradora! and Nagi from Hayate no Gotoku! , which is why she is also known as the "Queen of Tsundere" ( ツ ン デ レ の 女王 , tsundere no joō ).

Corresponding personalities can also be found in older productions, even if they were not called Tsundere at the time - such as Naru Narusegawa from Love Hina , Asuka Langley Sōryū from Neon Genesis Evangelion or Lina Inverse from Slayers . Kōichi Ichikawa ( 市 川 孝 一 ), one of the three leaders of the Comiket , named Lum from Urusei Yatsura as the source of Moe and the first Tsundere character.

influence

The concept behind the term has established itself in many well-known works. There are tsundere cafes in Akihabara ; H. Cosplay restaurants with apparently rude waitresses, and Japanese toy maker Takara Tomy launched a portable Tsundere TV in 2007 with the voice of Rie Kugimiya, which initially gives the user cool and nagging feedback, but over time it gets warmer and wistful.

Similar terms

The counterpoint to Tsundere is called Yandere - from yanderu ("to be sick") - and describes a character development from being in love to the violent outbreak of psychosis due to non-response of love or disappointment.

Related terms are kūdere ( ク ー デ レ ) from kūru (“cool”), d. H. a person who is usually cool and unapproachable or gives others the cold shoulder and only occasionally thaws in the vicinity of a loved one, as well as dandere ( ダ ン デ レ ) from danmari ("silent"), d. H. an introverted person of few words who only becomes a little more talkative with a loved one.
