Arakawa under the Bridge ( Japanese 荒 川 ア ン ダ ー ザ ブ リ ッ ジ ) is a gag manga series by the Japanese author Hikaru Nakamura . Since the end of 2004, the still ongoing manga has been printed in Young Gangan magazine. In 2010, Shaft animation studio, directed by Akiyuki Shimbo, adapted the plot as two thirteen-part anime television series. A television series aired on TBS and MBS in the summer of 2011 , and a feature film with the same cast was released in Japanese theaters on February 4, 2012.

The focus of the plot is Kō Ichinomiya ( 市 ノ 宮 行 , Ichinomiya Kō ). As the 22-year-old son of the president of the Ichinomiya Group , Seki Ichinomiya ( 市 ノ 宮 積 , Ichinomiya Seki ), he was brought up not to accept help because the thought of being in debt to someone is unbearable. Accordingly, the relationship with his father is very distant. One day, however, when Kō crosses the city's bridge, his pants are stolen from him during an attack and he receives help from Nino ( ニ ノ , Nino ), who is about the same age, without express request . Not being able to live with the thought of being in her debt, he lets herself go under the bridge with her and be her lover. There he has to quickly establish that the residents of the Arakawa river bed are anything but normal. So Nino first introduces himself to him as an alien from Venus and loves to hunt fish in the river, which she usually eats raw. In addition, she seems to have absolutely no idea what love is.
During an excursion through the area, he meets the “mayor of the village” ( 村長 , Sonchō ). He's a self-proclaimed 620 year old kappa , although it's perfectly obvious that he's just wearing a green suit. As the leader, he reserves the right to name anyone in the branch according to his own ideas. So Kō gets the name Recruit ( リ ク ル ー ト , Rikurūto ). There he also meets Hoshi ( 星 , Hoshi ), who considers himself a superstar and wears a mask in the shape of a star. However, his pieces of music are anything but worthy of a star. Nevertheless, his pieces are well received by almost all residents. Through his love for Nino, he comes into direct competition with Kō, which leads to various disputes between the two.
Little by little he gets to know more and more strange characters who nonetheless lead a social coexistence in which each character takes on a specific role. The community has a church in which Sister ( シ ス タ ー , Shisutā ) distributes alms in the form of biscuits to the residents. However, Sister is a muscular 29-year-old British man who previously served as a mercenary in the war. Accordingly, he carries various weapons under his robe and thinks about a possible attack at every opportunity and reacts accordingly. He himself is in love with Maria ( マ リ ア , Maria ), whom he met during the war and who spied on him. She now runs a small farm nearby, which ensures the supplies for the residents. Despite her appearance as a pink-haired beauty, she is extremely sadistic and distributes unexpectedly harsh insults, which are especially hard on Sister. Meanwhile, the red-haired girl P-ko ( P 子 , Pīko ) ensures the supply of fruit and vegetables . She is a dojikko , although she is dangerous in the truest sense of the word, as her little slip-ups result in great destructive power. Despite this danger, she desperately wants to get a driver's license, which Kō always tries to talk her out of. Meanwhile, it is suggested several times that she is in love with the leader, who should really not be a role model, but is still felt as such by the residents.
Shiro ( シ ロ , Shiro ) regularly appears as a minor character . He is a middle-aged man who suffers from the idea that he can only step on one white line at a time. Accordingly, he pushes a chalk cart in front of him. He was a former employee and accordingly has a great knowledge of economic matters. His real name is Toru Shirai ( 白 井 通 , Shirai Toru ), which he gave up when he settled in the settlement. The Tetsujin Kyōdai ( 鉄 人 兄弟 , dt. "Metal Brothers") appear as children . According to their name, they wear helmets made of metal, because they believe they have supernatural powers that suppress them. Sister's adopted daughter Stella ( St テ ラ , Sutera ) joins them . Despite her appearance as a cute little girl, she is very smart and, like Sister, extremely strong at fighting. She tends to prove her dominance again and again, which Kō in particular feels when he devotes himself to his task as a teacher.
The local hair salon is run by Last Samurai ( ラ ス ト サ ム ラ イ , Rasuto Samurai ), who comes from an old Samurai family and cuts hair in seconds with his sword. Billy ( ビ リ ー , Birī ) and Jacqueline ( ジ ャ ク リ ー ン , Jakurīn ) are the lovers in the settlement. He wears a parrot head and she wears a queen bee costume, claims to have 30,000 children and 10,000 husbands in her nest, and therefore regards her relationship with Billy as immoral. In fact, Billy used to be a yakuza and Jacqueline was the boss's wife he fell in love with.
Origin and publications
The manga series Arakawa under the Bridge is written and drawn by the Japanese artist Hikaru Nakamura . As of December 3, 2004, the chapters have been reprinted every two weeks within Young Gangan magazine, published by Square Enix . Due to the artist's pregnancy, the manga had to be suspended since September 2011; it is expected to be continued in the 8/2012 issue of Young Gangan , which is due to appear on April 6, 2012.
Starting on August 25, 2005, the chapters on Tankōbon issues were summarized, of which 12 pieces have been published so far (as of February 17, 2012).

Anime
The Japanese animation studio Shaft , directed by Akiyuki Shimbō, adapted the manga as a 13-part anime television series of the same name . The series was written by Deko Akao and the animation was directed by Nobuhiro Sugiyama . The design of the characters was based on the original drafts, but was revised again for the series by Nobuhiro Sugiyama. The artistic direction took over Kōji Azuma and the production of the music Masaru Yokoyama .
The series was first broadcast by TV Tokyo on April 5, 2010 after midnight and thus on the previous television day . There it ran on a weekly basis until June 28th. A few days after TV Tokyo, the stations TVQ Kyūshū , TV Osaka , TV Setouchi , TV Hokkaidō , which belong to the network , as well as the independent AT-X started broadcasting nationwide .
From May 4 to December 27, 2010 after midnight, the 13-part sequel Arakawa under the Bridge * 2 ( 荒 川 ア ン ダ ー ザ ブ ブ リ ッ ジ * 2 ; short for Arakawa under the Bridge × Bridge ( 荒 川 ア ン ダ ー ザ ブ リ ッ ジ × ブ リ ッ ジ )) followed TV Tokyo, as well as its connected transmitters and AT-X.

The opening credits of the series was underlaid with the title Venus to Jesus ( ヴ ィ ー ナ ス と ジ ー d ス , German "Venus and Jesus") by Etsuko Yakushimaru . In the credits the title Sakasama Bridge ( 逆 様 ブ リ ッ ジ , dt. " Inverted bridge") could be heard, which was interpreted by Suneohair . The opening and closing credits were released on May 26 and June 23, 2010 as singles of the same name. The fifth episode of the series had an alternative opening credits to which the title Title Nante Jibun de Kangaenasai na ( タ イ ト ル な ん て 自 分 で 考 え な な さ い な , dt. "Think the title yourself") was played by Miyuki Sawashiro .
Movie
On February 4, 2012, a live action film for the series was released in Japanese cinemas. In Arakawa Under the Bridge , Kō Ichinomiya is played by Kento Hayashi and Nino by Mirei Kiritani .
