The unique piece of the Natal Government Railways (NGR) designated as American D was a steam locomotive with a tender with the wheel arrangement 2'D1 '( Mountain ). It was the NGR's first superheated steam locomotive.

The locomotive, built by ALCO in 1909 , was the result of a visit to the USA by DA Hendrie, the chief engineer of the NGR. In contrast to the Hendrie D type designed by Hendrie, the machine was a typical American design with a bar frame, a high revolving system and a spacious driver's cab. The coupling wheel diameter was the same as that of the Hendrie D, the boiler pressure was lower, but this was compensated for by a larger cylinder diameter.

The superheater proved its worth, and the following shipment from Mountains, which was delivered as SAR class 3B in 1912, that is already at the time of the South African Railways , was also equipped with superheaters.

The American D was classified as Class 3A by the SAR with track number 1476 . Unlike the Hendrie D and Class 3B, it no longer received a standard boiler, but was retired in 1935.
