The vehicles of class 3B of the South African Railways (SAR) were steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement 2'D1 '( Mountain ). They were among the first superheated steam locomotives in South Africa.

SAR class 3B with Belpaire boiler , ca.1912

The locomotives were a further development of the wet steam type Hendrie D of the Natal Government Railways (SAR class 3) after this railway had had good experiences with a superheated steam test locomotive ( American D ) procured from the USA . Because the superheated steam made piston valves necessary, the cylinder group had to be redesigned, which is why the circulation was arranged a little higher than the Hendrie D.

Ten copies, like the Hendrie D, were built by the North British Locomotive Company and delivered in 1912, when the NGR had already been incorporated into the SAR. First, the locomotives, like the Hendrie D, were used on the steep upper part of the Natal Main Line . They were later transferred to the Eastern Transvaal and the Eastern Cape Province .

All 3B were equipped with new standard boilers during their service life and designated as class 3BR .

Most recently, the locomotives were used for shunting tasks in Cape Town . The decommissioning took place in 1974. Locomotive no. 1486 has remained operational under the care of the Umgeni Steam Railway in KwaZulu-Natal .
